Question about the bench

I have a 8month old female Cabo Pup. She is perfect no over bit, perfect cat feet. I am having a problem of getting her to calm down enough to work with her on the bench. She should be in the shows by now. Here is my question. How do I get her to calm down to work with? She is always on the go. She was treeing at 5 months old, split tree at 6months. I want to get her showing now.

DO something to tire her out before you get her on the bench. Try road working her.

You have to get her to a position of not being so wired and get her in a situation where she is workable. Hyper activity usually lends itself to needing more exercise. Can you let her run in the yard for a few hours?

Mr. Beyer is right. And getting to the show early and leaving them tied out until showtime really helps my younger dogs settle down and focus...

I have her running lose in my backyard with my daughters dog. Everytime you put her on the bench or touch her she wants to play.

Some dogs just aren't mentally ready for bench work at that age, just like some dogs aren't ready for the woods then. Sounds like she still has a lot of "puppy" left in her. If you've tried exercising her or letting her play before training sessions and she still is too wired to focus, you might consider letting her grow up a bit more before continuing to work her. It won't hurt her to mature some more before you show her. I know it's hard to wait though! Good luck...

Since this pup is doing so well in the woods, I'd try hunting her six nights in a row and working her about eight o'clock in the morning on the seventh day and each day their after. If shes tired, she is going to be a lot easier to handle. Tom

I HAVE ONE THAT JUST LOVES TO BE ON A BENCH!
HE'S IN A PERFECT POSITION TO LICK YOU ALL OVER THE FACE THEN~

DON'T GIVE UP ON HER. THE MORE YOU WORK WITH HER, THE BETTER SHE'LL GET.
SHE'S STILL A PUP.

HAVE FUN! SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD ONE THERE!

let her grow up!

Hope you read through the lines on this one....she's a baby. Let her grow up! If you take a switch to her for being happy, and hot wired, be prepared for her to shut down on the hunting too.

Hounds mature slowly....IMO....especially the happy ones. You're asking for advice, so you have probably already thought about the negative aspects of wrong actions now. Hounds have great memories.

Exercise her....run her, then do some obedience work in the yard. Work her on a leash, encourage and praise her when she quiets down. Show her what you want. They're not mind readers at that age.

She's already shown you her potential. If she's nice enough that you want to show her on the bench, then wait.....she's worth it.

Let her grow up

I will never spank her for wanting to play. She just has to much pup in her yet. I am happy with her anyway. Like I said she will tree her own coon, she loves to hunt and she is good at that. When she is ready for the bench, I will know. She obeys very will. Thanks to you all for the advice.

That is by far the best advice that anyone could give you. Have fun with your pup and try short training sessions preceeded and followed by play time and she should grasp the concept with some time!
