"Just A Dog"

From time to time, people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a dog,” or, “that’s a lot of money for just a dog.”

They don’t understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for “just a dog.”

Some of my proudest moments have come about with “just a dog.” Many hours have passed and my only company was “just a dog,” but I did not once feel slighted.

Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by “just a dog,” and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of “just a dog” gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it’s “just a dog,” then you will probably understand phases like “just a friend,” “just a sunrise,” or “just a promise.”

“Just a dog” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy.

“Just a dog” brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person.

Because of “just a dog” I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future.

So for me and folks like me, it’s not “just a dog” but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment.

“Just a dog” brings out what’s good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday they can understand that it’s not “just a dog” but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being “just a man.”

So the next time you hear the phrase “just a dog.” just smile, because they “just don’t understand.”

When you travel 1,000 miles to a hunt and the dog trees a possum on the first dump then you can tell me its not "just a dog"

When the dog licks its own stuff then you can say its not "just a dog"

When you walk a mile in to a treed dog and he leaves with you 100 yards out you can tell me its "just a dog".

When it sticks its nose in your girlfriends parents butt you can tell me its "just a dog"

When it rolls in dead animal carcasses or coon crap you can tell me its "just a dog"

I could go on forever. They are just dogs.

I have to agree there. I like my dogs...but they're just dogs. I think friends and promises are far more important than an animal that would leave you in a heartbeat for a total stranger if they wave a milk bone in front of it's nose.

when your dog accidently trees on someone elses property and the owner comes out and shots him dead, make sure you tell him not to worry about it that its "just a dog"

If your dogs are "just dogs" then I'd say there's a lack in the owner department...

I really like this, it is a picture from a book I recently bought, printed in 1924, COON HOUND DOG BREEDING & TRAINING. I am gonna clean the pic up a little, straighten it out and frame it.

I had rather spend time with my dogs than most people I know. That's probably a failing on my part but that's the way I feel.

I really don't know how to tell just how much my Dogs and Hounds have ment to Me and my Wife over the years !! "Moe" my Golden Retriver has been by my side for 9 years, One Day I sat my butt on a Stump in a fence row and Shot 12 Doves and never got off my butt !! Some were horrible Shots where wounded doves with a prit good tail wind went well over 100 yd.s and a double that I didn't even know were they fell, Moe was never trained to retrieve He just had it in him ... Just a very memorable day That as of yet hasn't been duplicated but not because of him just Me as my shooting has worsen .. That was a Dog working as a Friend Plus he has a Taste for Dove Heads !!

I have Dogs and Hounds that Carried me Thru a Bad Divorce and Back injury in the late 90s, call me weak or what ever but I had days that I didn't care if I lived too see the next but it seemed they knew how to get me going ..

We live with all our Hounds 16+ and 2 Goldens , They all live in the House and come and go as they feel. I work from home and their is usually 4-5 Hounds at my feet all day, I know instantly when one isn't feeling well or Moodie and Vice a Versa ..
Two of my Females can tell if I'am not Feeling well and they'll hang on me all day long , they won't let me out of their sight ..
To this Day I never go anywhere without some Hounds and maybe Golden in the Truck ..

"Just A Dog " Never !!

Just a dog

Sounds like Briar and MJFLORES have some real nice dogs!

Personally I felt pretty inspired by the post. Makes me remember how proud I am to own some fine hound dogs. My hounds are in no way perfect, they are not robots, and yes they have pissed me off pretty bad but if they didnt have flaws in em, then I really wouldnt know the true joy of owning a hound dog now would I. I beleive that the respect you give your dog is the respect it will give back to you. They are a lot smarter then most of us give em credit for.
Ive seen a huntin buddy almost get grabbed by a lion and his hound rushed the cat, knocked it over and the rest of the pack swarmed in. But hey he didnt get grabbed cause his dog pretty much saved him but.... it was just a dog

Ive seen dogs hunt their hearts out, obey their handlers every command, trail in extreme conditions, push themselves into some nasty and terrifying terrain, attack some of the grittiest big game animals and not back down, get ripped open from fighting big game and some end up hurt real bad and the minute you think you have worn em down they get a second wind and give it all theyve got and it is all to appease you! But hey...guess what it was just a dog.

These hounddogs do things that we would never even work up an incling of courage to do or face and have the capabilites to trail and track game in any environment. Without hounds there would be no HOUNDSMEN!

Someone mentioned something about the dogs hunting for someone else in the drop of a hat... true, most coondogs, especially dogs that are tied out or in a kennel most of the time except for hunting (nothing wrong with that) are just as happy with one guy as the next, but one of my dogs isn't quite like that. He is a big, strong, independent, flat out coondog that absolutely does not require attention or affection, but if im not at home at night my family doesn't sleep. He is restless all night because I'm not there. He sleeps in the bed with me every night and he is 100% MY dog. When someone else gives him a command he looks at me like "do you want me to do what they are asking" It's a good thing he is an outstanding coondog because i couldn't sell him even if he wasn't. He wants to go everywhere with me, no matter what i'm doing. It sounds kind of corny, but it's like something you would read in a book lol He is truly my pal. I know if he is feeling the tiniest bit ill. I can read his body language and i know what he is thinking, and he knows what i am thinking. I have developed a relationship that cannot be described with words. Most of yall are probably laughing at me lol but it's pretty dang cool to be this close to a hound. I have other hounds that i don't have this relationship with, but they are still more than "just a dog." If your dogs are "just dogs" to you, you are missing out.

As long as the landowner misses my shocking and tracking collar and is kind enough to give them back I am fine with this. It is my "property" that is trespassing on his "property". Emotion has no place in performance animals.

Most people that say just a dog, im guessing have never had a great dog, because if they did they would never refer to it as just a dog. Some of my greatest memories was following a dog that was consistent in treeing coon, a dog that i couldnt wait to turn loose, a dog that tried to please me every cut, a dog that i was proud to own. Grand Night Champion Blow By You Diamond::::: Night Champion Richardsons Spike(died at a young age)::::: 19 month old Night Champion Owl Creek Speck::::: And watch out for me and my buddys dog Nocturnal Mighty Mouse

Theres no other feeling like turning a dog loose and seeing a coon up the tree when you get there.

Its not tough, its realistic. How can you realistically evaluate something you are attached to? Just like people with their kids that "do no wrong" meanwhile they are a terror to everyone around them.

I'm not tough at all, I just don't give a crap. The next one is just as "cute" as the last one. To be honest I really don't see a difference from one dog to the next. Every single one does something that makes me nuts. When they go I focus on that one thing that drove me nuts and wish them good riddence.

You all just keep letting your dog that eats crap lick your face, I could care less.
