I've shocked and shocked and shocked

I must be doing it wrong. Thats all I can say.

My Nite Champion female and my 4 year old male has decided that they can't leave bears alone. out of the last 7 nights of hunting, they have treed 4 bears, bayed 2 up that wouldn't tree, and treed one dang coon.

I know that we got a lot of bears around here, but man I can't seem to get them to leave them the hell alone.
I've shocked her for running them, I ever spent $23 on some bear scent and shocked them hard for 2 days in a row both at the house and in the woods for sniffin it. now they won't go near the scent, but still burned a bears ass for about 6 hrs last night till i could get to them.

I am about at my whits end. I love these hounds but this is getting darn ridiculous.

Any ideas?

thanks

PD Gohil

When you are shocking them are you just pressing the button for about a half a second or are you holding that baby for 8 seconds on high until it cuts off, wait and then repeat until she makes it back to the truck not when you think she quit . If so and she is still running them sale her to someone that hunts where there are no bears and get another dog I know it may be hard but beats bear huntin when you should be coonhuntin.

I've

gotton personal a few times with some of my hounds with a heavy switch, sometimes its hard to get in front of them so when I did they knew why they were getten a a-- whoppen,a breaken box seems the best way when nothing else works,Iuse a old dog box and close it off and leave just enough hole so they want suffacate.I put a rag heavy with the sent in side with them and Ikeep them inside for a few days until when I PULL THEM OUT TO FEED AND WATER THEM,DAILY. They would rather joke them self the other way on the lead than to go back into the box. After this try them again in the woods,if nessasery repeat and this time after you refresh the rag with sent when you feed, give a little shock with collar while in the box.Only a few days at a time though, then try them again. Some hounds you cant break, some for awhile at a time, some break themselfs ,others, well they just arnt interested. Dont ever over doit with a shock collar, dont ever hit the botton if ya ant for sure their wrong. It is a wonderful training tool if used right.Seen alot of good hounds ruint in the wrong hands.

That's the best ad for bear dogs that I've ever read! I actually believe it!
Usually a pretty good market for bear dogs here in CA, and bear season is just getting started.

Boggyswamp, I'll try holdn't the button a little longer next time, that may just be the ticket, I usually give them a one - two count when i do. Heck, half the problem is knowing if they are on a cold coon track, and pushing it for a while, or on a bear that they are walking through the brush. Its tough for just two dogs to put a lot of pressure on a bear.

Coons age, I think that may work also, but I dont feel comfortable shuttin my dog in a box when its summer time, maybe this fall that will work.

thanks

Jeff,

I grew up bear hunting, i have been toe to toe with more bears bayed up than most see in their lives, I understand that risks, and dangers. I enjoy bear hunting with hounds, have done it for most of my life, but these hounds are suppossed to be COONHOUNDS.

That is my issue! I could sell this pair of hounds if selling is what I was interested in, but I AM NOT! I have a problem, and am trying to find a solution for it.

Now, let me ask another question.... Where to get the scent for the barrel? I agree that a fresh bear hide would do wonders, but hard to come by. I have a bottle of CRONKS BEAR BREAKING SCENT. this is what I used for break training, but it hasn't slown them down any? I am totally open to suggestions. thanks

Ok Im going to be told Im wrong but here goes. Breakin scents and barrels ARE NOT as effective as the have no mercy shock collar treatment. Meaning do not have no mercy ON HIGH until they find you . I believe the tri Tronics will shock for 8 seconds before they time out but I do give about 30 second breaks between them. I run 15 inch hard hitting rabbit dogs and trying to convince a hard headed pup that you do not want them to run a good smelling Doe nanny or exspecially a rutting Buck that you can smell is like trying to keep me away fom Fried Chicken. A Tri Tronics Trash Breaker is th best breaking investment you will ever make. I know its hard to be mean to a dog you care about and have put a lot of time in but it took alot of whippings for my daddy to convince me of what was right and wrong. JMO and what I was showed by the man that got me into Rabbit Dogs was the most effective breakin method.

midnight melody this is just me 2 cents.. if shocking wont stop them then just stop it and let them do what they like best.. tree bears. now i know thats not what you want but they sure do so just sell them to a bear guy and buy you a coon dog.

I would take one dog at a time with some guys that bearhunt and when there dog was running a bear I would light yours up with the TRI-TRONICS until it came back. Good Luck on how ever you do if it gets done.

Before you get too carried away , let me ask you a question , and bear with me for a few posts...............

Let's say you're walking down the street and see an ice cream shop across the road. You decide you want an ice cream , so you turn and start to cross the street. You get about half way across and BAM ! You're hit by a truck !
What happened to that thought of the ice cream?
My guess is that it is GONE ! Not thinking about it one way or the other. All you're thinking about is the extreme pain you are in RIGHT NOW.
Sound about right? Make sense?

beake dogs from running bear or off game

Get Wick first book. There is a breaking box in it that works. The second book he did not put in there because of the humane socaity. I had a bluetick that I got from Elvert vaughn that would run Bobcat, Deer, and anything elce that made a track. I bought the book and followed the instruction exactly. when I finished I took this hound hunting where I had prevously seen deer, he shot throught the wood hunting just like always, but when he came accross the deer track he came back with his tail between his legs. After this he would only run coon, no off game at all. He made the best coon hound I ever owned. Thought this might help. Thanks Rex
