Lyme Disease

Here’s what happened to one of our dogs. On a springtime hare hunting trip to northern Wisconsin our dog contacted Lymes Disease. W took him to the vet for tests and that is what he was diagnosed with. His symptoms were like severe arthritis. He was down in the front end and could hardly walk. He was in great pain and when you picked him up he would cry out. We gave him a course of Doxycycline antibiotics for 30 days and let him rest for about 3 months and we are now back to trialing him again. They say this comes from a bite of a deer tic.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyme_disease

an infected tick must be attached for at least a day for transmission to occur.
useing a good insecticide will kill the tick with 2-10 hours so its very unlikely to get if you use products like frontline/advantage etc.

http://www.cdc.gov/healthypets/diseases/lyme.htm
here they say up to 36 hours is needed to transmit

Tick related

Lymes and Rocky Mountain Spotted fever are both treated with
Doxycycline. Let me tell you the treatment is bad enough by it's self. A lot of side effects with Doxycycline. If that is what it has got and you treat it with Doxycycline , don't push the dog to run too soon. Let it rest up a few months. I had RMSF last year and it is rough to get over and the same with Doxycycline side effects.
