Non hunting dogs

UKC really needs to take a strong look at the rules regulating non hunting dogs.

Judges, you guys and gals really need to hit that darn stop watch a little quicker and get those dogs out of the hunt.

The best dog isn't winning! The "me too" dog is.

I just recently started attending beagle hunts again after several years of just rabbit hunting. One thing I have had in every cast (except one) is one dog that will not hunt or just hunts every once in a while. These "lap dogs" won two casts. One by coin toss due to a tie and the other because it was a good track dog and would get last strike (because it didn't leave it's owners feet until another dog struck in) and then first on lines.

These dogs should not be winning and must be scratched. That's just the way it is. Put the time on them as soon as they return and DON'T MOVE until they go hunting again or are scratched.

I had a pup of mine scratched for this reason and it didn't bother me a single bit. He deserved it and should have been scratched long before he actually was. He wouldn't hunt with the strange dogs and didn't deserve to be there with them. It's that simple.

The dog I'm currently hunting (Scotty's Pride Strike Stiff) has been in 3 casts, making the winner's pack twice. You couldn't get 5 minutes of non hunting on him if you combined all 5 times he's been released. A couple of these casts pushed the 90 degree mark. There are a lot of dogs out there that hunt just as hard and harder than him. Point being, these dogs are sometimes being outscored by the foot dog that never takes a minus because it never takes a chance. Are these the dogs we want populating the gene pool?

Judges, start the clock, stop walking the dogs to get them to hunt, and send those dogs to the truck. Some of you are really nice guys and I know you aren't there to scratch a dog but the bottom line is that these handlers know what they are unsnapping when they get up and drive there in the morning. They are just hoping to get a just that is lean on that rule.

Scratch 'em.

The only one that beat me was in a final cast. If I'd had know the rules better, that would not have happened. We had no points at the end of the hour and flipped a coin. I thought this is how the hunt was supposed to end. According to the rules, we should have continued to hunt in hour intervals until there was a winner. The coin flip only comes into play if both parties agree to it. I shouldn't have. The dog I lost to wouldn't have made it another hour.

So, "it's" only beat me once but I hate for the chance to even be there or to see a non hunting dog beat out any other dog in any cast that does do a better job.
