I have a young male dog that will run and tree with other dogs great and has split treed. If i hunt him alone and he trees once i start walkin to him and get 10 or 20 yards from him he shuts up and comes out to me. He will go back to the tree anybody got any ideas on how to get him to stick the tree til i get there.

Cut you a green switch make it uncomfortable to him when he meets you dont beat him just hard enough to get his attention then tie him up at the tree and praise him if he has the coon it wont take long

Keep hunten him by himself...get to the tree as fast as you can...Tie him up Don`t switch him Praise the heck out of him if you see the coon...Better yet start knocken coons out to him....He`ll click...

The dog is excited and is looking forward to the praise he knows is coming. Fuss at him when he meets you and make it clear that he will only receive positive attention AT THE TREE! Progress to the swicth if needed.

Shooting the coon out is prabably not the answer unless you are hunting with more than just him. Then you catch him away from the tree and tie him up (away from the tree) shoot the coon if you want but highly praise the dog at the tree.

I WOULDNT KNOCK THE COONS OUT TO HIM UNLESS HE IS DOING WHAT YOU WANT HIM TO DO. IF YOU DO, HE MIGHT START THINKING HE CAN DO WHATEVER HE WANTS LIKE LOAFERING AND STILL GET THE COON.

If this happens to me I stop where the dog meets me and generally say get on the "explicit" tree. I wait till they do and then I will proceed towards them, leash them, pet them a little, and then shine.

If they keep doing it I do more than say get on the tree usually with the leash.

Your young dog is meeting you to get praise.

I have had three or four to do this over the past few years. I was able to break all but one. She still does it at 6 years old. She will come to meet me, then circle and run back to the tree. She knows better but just can't help herself.

Just scold him a little when he meets you. Then walk right past him toward the tree. If he goes back quickly, go in and pet him. If he takes a while to go back, scold him a little more. If he continues to do it, you may need to use a small switch when he meets you.

my female would do the same thing. a buddy told me to get in there to where i could see what tree she was on. and when she would come off the tree i'd leash her up there where i caught her. and i'd shoot the coon out and not give her any of it. and piss her off and make her want it. it might take half dozen times to work. but it did really help.

Scold the dog, where he or she meets you thats good advice. just had a young female do the same thing, shes got a good head on her. She now stays at tree, sometimes she not facing or standing on tree, but she stay's. Now I am working on her to be on the tree and forget about me. I do think there looking for praise. Good scolding and maybe a little kick in butt on her way back to tree should cure probllem.

Go in with your light off and go in easy so he don't hear you coming. Catch him on the tree and let him know that is where you want him to be. Using a switch will help as well, like BIG$BLUES said, don't be to hard on him, just make it uncomfortable.

here ill explain something to you , i know that a dog needs a good switch now and then but for every thing that they do wrong they don't for example if you beat your dog sensless for every thing that he or she does sooner or later your dog will turn into a robot , and only respond in a way they would almost make them robotic and your the one with a controller, so here is a thought let the dog come back to you ten to twenty yards is not that hard to break. let him go back treeing shoot the coon out and do not let him have it put his nose right in fron of it and pull him away next drop cut him loose and really praise him for getting treed depending on if he came back to meet you or not continue doing this sooner or later he will get treed and stay treed he will not come off,

If a dog stops barking up a tree for any reason I will not take another step towards that tree. If they come back to meet me I greet them with a slap across the nose with a small switch and I don’t say a word to them. When they start treeing again I’ll start walking again I’ve found that they get on to it pretty quick. I have a female that will sometimes still come off about 20 feet to meet me turn quickly and she’s right back on that tree but she never gets close enough to get slapped. She’s a real nice stay-put tree dog that has never milled around the tree so I don’t worry about it too much but she better not come within range of that stick and she knows it. I don’t offer much praise to a dog at the tree and if I do it’s just a pat on the side as I’m taking them off the tree. Good luck with your dog.

See if you can get him back on the tree he was treed on and get him treed again.
My fathers always told it was good to get to a young dog starting out as fast as you can and tie em up, make sure they know your always coming for them.

Shooting coons out will have the opposite effect of what you want. They will start to equate you coming to the tree with a coon coming out of the tree. Then when you walk up, they will quit treeing and start milling around trying to guess where the coon is going to fall. I saw this happen with a buddy's dog. He shot out coons when his dog wasn't treeing hard and that made it a whole lot worse.

I would stay out from the tree with my light off for awhile and let him tree, and than slowly walk into the tree with my light off. And tie him up and praise the dog for awhile. Pat on the tree and have him tree on it for awhile while you are there. All the dog is wanting is praise. Never spank a dog for treeing a coon. It will have a negative effect on the dog. But when you praise a dog for treeing a coon it will have a postive effect on the dog. You will tree lot more coon. The only time I spank my in the woods, is when they are pups, and they pup up anykind of trash, and they will be on the second time. Because on the first time I will not praise the dog, and I will just talk to them. If they do it again they will get the end of my leash not hard just to let them know that is wrong with a point proven.
