showing dogs?

I know very little about showing dogs (close to nothing)

My daughter is wanting to show a couple 9 month old pups. One of them has a crook at the end of her tail. Is that a fault?
Another thing is that they do not have very good feet. how important are there feet?
They stand well just dont know much about conformation.
They are very nice looking walker hounds just dont know if they are show material or not.

Feet are Very important

It's difficult to win with a hound that doesn't have good feet. A crooked tail isn't as serious as poor feet.

what qualifies as poor feet? I said they have poor feet but I really wouldnt know how poor. they are a little flat footed and their toes are spread apart a little.

The crook in the tail means next to nothing on the bench. The feet on the other hand are major. A dog may have good feet, but if the handler is not experienced, they may not know how to get the dog up on it's toes.

Take her and the dogs to a couple of shows and get some opinions on them. Also, a good number of folk will work with your daughter on how to 'stack' a dog and show her how it is done. I always try my very hardest to teach newcomers what I can to show a dog to their best potential. I never discourage anyone, even if I know the dog may not be the greatest. All dogs have good and bad in them, none are perfect.

My best advice is to go to shows and watch, ask and be willing to learn.

This is my CH female, Dessa

That's a good point! EVERYONE of us has a different interpertation of what is "cat like" as the standard calls for!

Here's you a couple pics of some Walkers on the bench that have some pretty good feet.

If you can get some pics and put them on here for us to see. Sometimes dogs just don't know how to get "up on their toes" and it takes a little work.

Exactly. That is one of the reasons I told him to go to some local shows and ask for help. Beautiful dogs BTW, nice feet and structure.

Post some pictures so we can see them, please.

check if there is a training club in the area that has showmanship classes. She could get hooked up with someone else who shows and could learn a lot. I don't show, but the people I traid with taught me how to "stack" a dog to get the right lines.

Not to detract from the question at hand, but what about a dog who's tail is naturally carried over his back? I have one whose tail is always carried up and it tips over and touches his back... Would this be a fault?

Some old pictures of him...

I call that a curly tail. I had one with that kinda tail and never had a problem showing him, he wasn't the best show dog so never thought that his tail mattered. I've seen some others show and finish to grand, but mostly at the local shows. I have one now that carries her tail real high and the tip almost touches her back sometimes, guess we'll find out soon if thats gonna hurt at the shows.

RINGTAIL

is a fault - but not a MAJOR fault when showing.

The only way I would consider a dog with curly tail a fault, is if 2 dogs of equal quaility were up on the bench and I had to decide which dog was the best, I would go with the dog without the curly tail. In my opinion, that would be minor. Same as a crooked tail.

I thought my dog had poor feet...... come to find out i was told she had great feet and that she would do great on the bench,

A met someone up there who was very helpfull and put my dog on the bench and had her on her toes like it wasnt nothing.
Made me feel good to know she was show material. Thanks for the input everybody. Now I can feel good about puttimg my little girl in a show.

awsome!

be sure to post the winning pics of her! and by that I mean just making it to the show ring
p.s. encourage her to ask questions emediately(before leaving the ring) if she does not place so she can possibly learn more.
BEST WISHES!
