Panacur kills most of the common worms but does not kill the most common tapeworm. Dorantal (praziquantel) will kill tapeworms and most other worms. When I get a new dog in, I like to give it a dose of praziquantel and three days of Panacur. You can buy Panacur under the name of Safe Guard at places like farm supply stores, Petco, and Petsmart. Praziquantel is sold under several brand names, Tradewind is one I think.
You can also use a heartworm preventative called Iverhart Max. I can get it for less than a dose of Dorantal at the vet. It contains ivermectin, pyrantel pamoate, and praziquantel. A monthly dose of that stuff keeps most worms out of the household.
There are a couple of types of worms that aren't covered by this type of attack because the wormers are only effective during a certain stage of the worms development. A formal fecal test is the only way to know that you are covering the right bases. For me, however, I hit them hard when the come in (unless they have serious diaherra) and then test a couple weeks later. That way I don't have to test twice since the test is typically more expensive than the treatment.
