Many pups don't have their first heat cycle until 13 or 14 months old. Only about half of the females I have kept have had a cycle by eight months old.

The 12 year old is likely just too old.

That was my thot as well. could it be that the young female wont go into heat because the older one doesnt any more cause i know you can force a female into heat with another female in heat. didnt know if it had anything to do with it

That will not affect your young female.

heat cycles

your 12 year old sounds like is going through the change of life in other words like a woman does. dogs have a change of life ( stop haveing minpause). As for the young female if she hasn't came into heat by now then she should when she becomes a year old. with female pups one has to start looking for the young female to come into thier first heat cycle between the ages of six months and a year old. In other words if she has had her first heat cycle by now then look for her to come in the first time at a year old or a few months after a year old. Just remimber that and don't let anyone get you worried about or convince you other wise. always remimber between ages of six months and a year is the time frame for the first cycle it can happen any time in that time frame so just be patient and let nature take it's course and don't try to force her to come that will add to much stress on her just let nature run it's course and it will happen dude. As for the 12 year old if she does come back into heat I wouldn't breed her because she is to old and it's alot harder on an old dog to go through preagnacy and labor where you would more than likely lose her and end up nurse a litter of pups your self every two ours just enjoy your time you have left with her.

My aunt had a hound mix who was nearly 2 years old before she came into her first heat cycle. I had never heard of such a thing before that.
