or does it seem that a lot of guys are leting field trials dictate what a good gun dog should be? I'm seeing a lot of hounds making hbch that in no way is showing me that i could consistently kill rabbits over in the tuff scent conditions of rabbit season.It seems as though a lot of guys are shying a way from nose power afraid of taking a minus or two.Don't get me wrong there are still some nice ones that i see but when you see 6mo old pups placing what does that say for the competition in the format.

Would like to know others opinions on this matter.

Everybody likes a certain type of hound, and everyone has an opinion of what a hound should be. I myself have the opinion that a dog should not open unless it can produce a rabbit.
When I'm gun hunting I don't want to raise my gun on false alarms. I want a dog, when he barks the rabbit is up.
This opinion has nothing to do with field trailing.
Most dogs that open early are usually mouthy dogs, that screw up the other dogs that are trying to find todays rabbit. Has nothing to do with there nose being better, a good dog will work a track without barking untill its hot. Back to my first statement everyone has a there own opinion. Run what make you happy, but field trials don't dictate what I'm looking for in a hound. 73's

I agree on some of what Jamey said! Except raising my gun to false alarms!??? I don't raise my gun till the rabbit is circled. If a dog opens and runs a full circle and no rabbit (well the dog wouldn't be in my kennel very long.) But I do agree with it's preference. I also like a dog to open AFTER the rabbit is up.
Now having said that I also agree with the first post. I have hunted with some dogs who are winning in field trials. I have seen alot of these dogs over run a track 75 yds and screw up everything. Pulling other dogs with them. Personally I would rather have a dog keep the track between it's legs.

well i have seen dogs that work off other dogs and win casts i dont mind a dog that takes first strike as long as that produce i see dogs that dont hunt till other dogs get the rabbit going then thay take some first lines and ther right in the hunt i have lately been looking at some hounds that i was told are good dogs wanting big money for them its hard to find a real good mix of hunt jump and good foot that know how to hold a track alot of it matters what cast you get with and caliber of dogs 1 first is not enought to show me its a great hound

if you are seeing a dog over run a track 75 yards then why is ruff running not being called?

Don't get me wrong i don't like mouthy dogs either but i want a hound that needs no help in tuff scent conditions,i just don't see those consistently in this format. Like craighamilton said there is a lot of hounds that look good in a pack but can they do it by thereself. Feed what you like but i hold higher standards than most i guess. That hbch don't mean jack in my book!

Varnes- I was rabbit hunting when I saw this! More than once. This dog is now winning hunts. Not saying it's not a good dog but not in my mind a Champion Hunting dog! That's why I like Performance Pack. It's more about the dog and not the handler.

I might take a better look into the performance pack, seems like it is set up for more of my likeing. Just get the best hounds in the winners pack i don't want to see some 6mo old get in because he just kept his mouth shut not showing that he can run a good track.

I know what your saying Kennith, sometimes it's hard to take, when some dogs just get lucky. It's all apart of the raindeer games. The best dog doesn't always win, no matter the format.
As long as your proud of your little dynomite nothing us matters.

Let me ask this, how does everyone feel about the judgeing of the performance pack? I don't think i've seen anybody on here complaining much about it. They must be doing something right over there.
