bench training

i have never trained a dog to bench but my wife wants to enter a few shows dose anyone have any tips on how to train a dog for bench thanks

I'm in the same boat you are.......I did a google search and found this web site.....Hopefully it will help...it's pretty detailed. ( Although I'm not into the "clicker" thing at all )

Only been showing dogs for a couple of years

So I am not an expert, these are just things I have learned.

Most importantly start out with a dog that shows good, it's much easier to start with one that you don't have to prod, push and pull to get stacked up. As you get better you can do that.

Also go to a few shows and watch and after the show is over ask questions. Have your dog there and get someone to watch/help you set them up. There are no stupid questions, you won't learn if you don't ask.

If you know someone with a copy of the book Jr Lassiter wrote about showing borrow it and read it.

Lastly practice, practice, practice and have fun doing it!!!!!!

I agree that it's a lot easier to start with showing a dog that knows what it's doing. When I started my dogs didn't know what they were doing either, and things didn't go so well. I had a reputable handler in my area keep my dog for a couple months leading up to the Grand American and when I finally got to start showing her she was totally broke...that combined with what the guy showed me about setting her up helped me a LOT. I've learned so much in the past year watching experienced handlers show. Like Kevin said, most people will be more than happy to help if you ask.

As far as training your dog, I've found that what works best for me is working them on the bench for about 10 minutes a couple times a day. My 8 month old that lives in the house was SUPER easy to bench break...I was able to show him after about 3 weeks of quick sessions a couple times a day. During your sessions just be very patient, and don't get frustrated if you have to reset his legs and stuff a few times. He'll get the hang of it before long! Good luck!

1-praise and treats work well too.
2-if the dog already has good feet, you have got half the battle won.
3-dont get frustrated - will set you and the dog back a lot (been there, done that)
4-shorter sessions for younger pups, getting longer as they age and "get it"
5-depending on how 'hard headed' the dog is will help determine how you can handle and talk to them during the sessions.
6-i'm working with one now that has not seen much bench time at 10m, she has had 4-5 sessions and is getting better.
7-keep control of the head, if the head falls, the body follows.
8-watch many other people. each will do somthing different and those tricks may or may not work on your dog
9-ask other people if they will give you pointers
10-watch the people that win alot and the ones that dont. try to see what the difference is in the dogs they are showing. are some flat footed, sway backed, no angulation, etc.
11-try to emulate what others are doing and incorporate how they handle their dogs into what you do.
12-try to have fun and not get frustrated with the politics.

A specific question for you trainers out there: when stacking my dog she does real well, she just wants to turn and look at me instead of looking straight ahead. Any tips?

Roger even my most broke dogs will do that every now and then. When I'm working with my younger dogs if they turn their heads I grasp them under their muzzle and firmly put their head back in place while telling them "stand" or "head up." These are just the 2 commands I use with my dogs, you could always tell them "no" if they really understand it, or whatever works for you. Even if you have to do it 20 times in a session they'll figure it out eventually if you're consistent.

Josh, it looks like he is wanting to push back on you. he may be scared or nervous. have you tried stacking him on the ground in order for him to get an idea of "this is what i have to do". sometimes ground stacking leads to better bench stacking.

also, some dogs are afraid of heights, if the bench is unsteady, etc
