Dogs eating stool?

Yesterday afternoon I noticed one of my blue females eating a fresh pile of stool. Interestingly enough I've never seen any of my dogs do this until I started feeding Hi-Pro last fall for a couple weeks, then switched to Pro-Plan. When I had a couple of my dogs out being bench broke the guy that had them told me he'd seen them eating stool when they first got there (that's when they started on Pro-Plan) and giving them a B-12 shot seemed to help the problem. Any suggestions on how to stop this? I've always heard dogs eating stool have some sort of vitamin or mineral deficiency, but you wouldn't think they would be lacking anything eating such a high-end food. Not sure if this is related, but this particular dog will literally GRAZE on grass when let out in a grassy area as well.

Sure, it's supposed to work the same way as buying the expesive Forbid powder from your vet, you sprinkle the powder on their food and it makes eating the poop undesirable, the fig newtons do the same thing, it makes the poop uneatable, it's cheaper too. A vet I worked for "prescribed" it all the time.

That's a thought, but I don't care enough about her eating poop to BEAT her for it. After all, it's not like I let her lick me in the face, and hey that's less clean-up for me. I'm just concerned that she may be lacking something she needs health-wise.

The fig newton idea is interesting. I've never heard that either, but I bet she wouldn't mind eating a cookie every day haha!

Hahaha, GA DAWG I don't particularly like feeding those types either unless I just get attached to them, but right now she's the best dog I've got in the woods. I can't quit feedin' her just because she eats the feed twice!

I've always been told that a dog that eats grass has worms. I dont really know if thats correct but I do worm them if I see them grazing.

Read an article in one of my dog magizines that said you can use pineapple chunks. Put a few in the food, supposed to work like those forbid powders. I'll try to find the article scan it in and email it to you, if you want.

The sites some of you listed were interesting. Jessica, wonder if canned pineapple chunks would work? Guess it wouldn't make a difference, could be something to try...

What do you do for dogs that don't eat their own poop but will eat every other things poop. We have had two Pugs that made it their lifes mission to look for something else's poop.

Go to the grocery and get a bottle of Adolph's meat tenderizer and put that on the food. Soak the food in water if it's a kibble. The enzymes in the Adolph's partly digest the protien in the dog food, which helps the dog absorb more of the nutrients in the food. If you've got dogs running together, all of them need the Adolph's.

That's what dogs do..they eat crap. I've never had a young dog that didn't do it.

In an adult, it usually isn't a problem but... If it's a good feed, and you're giving them too much, they will pass what they dont use and the crap will be "appetizing" if that's even possible. A dog's body can only process so much and it passes the rest.

Try cutting back on the feed.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll try adding something into the food to see if that stops it. I'm certain I'm not feeding her too much right now...I feed a little bit less than the amount recommended on the feed bag for her, and she's in better shape now than she ever has been since I bought her. If anything she's a little on the small side, and I hate to cut back her feed too much while she's being hunted as well.
