Home Remidies for Poison Oak!! HELP!!

We went hunting last Wednesday night, and I (big dummy me) wore shorts. It was toooo hot for pants, and I figured I would take my chances with nature. Well, we ended up going through a pretty bad briar thickett, and I got scratched. No big deal. Well, I couldn't make it all the way to the tree, it turned straight up and down. I stopped about 250 foot from the tree. I could see the dogs good, just couldn't make it to them. Anyways, I was leaning on a tree to keep from falling back down the mountain, and I didn't think to look at it. Guess what it was covered in. POISON OAK. I'm terribly allergic to it. I felt something burning on my knee, and I looked down only to see a broken poison oak stem touching a briar scratch on my knee. Well, needless to say, I now have poison oak blisters the size of dimes on my knee. I've been putting Calamine lotion on it, but it's not doing that hot. It's right on the top of my knee so that when I bend it OR straighten it the blisters pop open and start leakin all down my leg.

Help! Got any ideas?

Christy, i get it real bad eyes swell shut and stuff. evrybody will tell you about their remedy. it actually runs its coarse. seven or eight days, whether you put anything on it or not. if you try somthing about 7or 8days into it, it will actually look like the stuff is working, when in reality its just running its coarse, and will be leaving anyway. i ran a post on here awhile back and some folks said jewell weed works it might i dont know. but nothing else really does.. i have tried it all.. now what does really work is not a home remedy its those steroid shots or pills from a doctor. there not real expensive though... i hope this helps some, and hope you hurry up and get well... gary woods

Gary:

Thanks!

I have had PO before, but this is really bad. I've never had it to blister up like this. It usually just spreads really quick on me. These are the biggest blisters I have ever had.

Thanks again.

Frances Gail is a registered nurse and she says over the counter cortizone ointment may help She also reccomends Caladryle Clear which may be about the same as calamine lotion except doesn't stain your cloths. She says soak a wash cloth in ice water and apply it to the affected area may offer some relief. I used to be really affected by poison ivy but I reckon I finally got around it so much, it doesn't seem to bother me as much these days. But, I never push my luck by wearing shorts to the woods, I invested in a good pair of Dan's nylon overalls. She says some doctors reccomend predizone but having to use it for my lungs, I don't personally reccomend it. She says lance and drain your blistors but be sure not to get any of the drainage on your, that will spead it. I hope you find some relief.

I dunno about any home remedies but I'd go to Wal mart and buy some stuff called "Tech Nu". It works. It supposedly has stuff in it that breaks down the toxic oil thats in Poison Ivy. So, when I come in from hunting, if I suspect I got in some, I just wash with this stuff, its kind of like washing with soap. It'll even work several hours after exposure, so even if you start to break out, it might not be too late for it to do some good.

You can get the prednisone pack from a doctor prescription where you reduce by one pill per day...

you can use Fels Naptha soap. It is a bar soap that is a laundry soap and it is hard to find but is in the laundry soap section of the store. It will take the burn and itch out and will help dry it up. This is my favorite. You can also make a paste of it and put on the blisters.

also, when you know you've been in it, take plain Ivory Dish soap and scrub and wash immediately when you get back to the soap and water; I carry it in my dog box all the time.

Good luck...

I have the same thing happen when my husband and i cut wood one year. A doctor also told me to use Solarcane. It is at Walmart in a spray can, in the pharmacy section. Other than that I think it just has to run it's course. Good luck .

"Tech NU"

The stuff sold at walmart-"Tech NU" is made of MINERIAL SPIRITS & ANTI-FREEZE (Poly-glyco?) . A good splash of bleach on a cotton ball works good also.

Thanks Guys!!!

For all the information. I have been putting Calamine sp? lotion on it, and it either seems to be drying up because of that stuff, or it's almsot been a week.

There is one blister that is really big, and I keep hitting it on everything, then it busts and that water runs down my chin. Now I have it starting in a little line down my chin.

They should use this stuff as some kind of torture device..lol. I'd talk in no time!

The good news is that from now on, all you will have to do is look at Poison Oak and you will break out. I went 27 years and never had it bother me. Then one night I got into it pretty badly and broke out all over hands and arms. JUST GO TO THE DOCTOR, prednisolone packets or a cortisone shot works. It does take 7 or 8 days to get rid of, but a shot will give relief in a day or two.

Once you geta bad case of PO, you will get plenty more. The doc will even tell you this.

Got to hate it

Hey Christy,
I just got over this a week or so ago. We were cutting vrush around the club house and same situation. I got a scratch on my arm and the sap from the Oak fell on it. BIG BLISTER that just started to spread. Here is what I did:

The Calidril was a waste of time. Did not do a thing!!!!
Wife got me the "Tech Nu" from Wal-Mart and that really seemed to help. The gell is a LIFE SAVER. Just about stops the itch right away. Wash with the soap to prevent the spreading. This stuff cuts the olils from the plant almost as soon as you use it. Heck, was made to counter act radiation on the skin so Oak and Ivy is a pretty simple task for it to over come.
I also took a wash cloth, soaked it with Bleach and wiped down all of the infected areas. In 2 days the rash was completely dried up and flaking off. Just don't get none on the clothes.

Good luck and wear pant's next time. You will only sweat for the night and not itch for the next 7 to 14 days!!!!!!!!

Ugh, that poison oak sounds miserable Christy. I hope you're feeling better.

I get Domeboro's tablets over the counter at the Pharmacy. You dissolve them in water, put solution on washcloth or gauze pads and hold on the itchy spots. It has an astrigent and helps to dry up the blisters as well as relieving the itching.

I have found something that works on mine if I catch it early enough. If it has really started to spread then it's too late for this but if you catch it early heres what works for me. I get some of that orange hand cleaner called GOJO . It is really gritty and full of pumice. Rub it GENTLY on the poison oak and then rinse GENTLY with COLD water. repeat 4 or 5 times a day, good luck. works great for me.
