Wayne,

I have read up on it a time or two on the net. I think it would be blast.

Yes

Amateur "Ham" Radio can be lots of fun. You can talk to the space station, Kings, Princes, Doctors, Farmers, Missionaries, plumbers, folks from all walks of life. This can all be done via voice or digital modes via computer. Help out in disasters when no other modes of communications are available. There is a niche for everyone and their preferances or interests. Alot of todays technology wouldn't be around had it not been for Hams and their experimentation with electronics. I've only ever talked to one other coonhunter several years ago. Just trying to see if anyone on here was in the hobby and wanting to get together on the air.

first

you need a license. Info. can be optained at www.ARRL.ORG ..Yes hand helds are used alot. Some repeaters have 50 mile + range. They can be used with the entry class license. The test is not hard.. To talk around the world on HF frequencies you need one of the higher classes of license, there are 2, General and Extra. They require more testing and currently a morse code test. They are in the process of eliminating the code requirement. These 2 tests are more advanced in radio and electronics theory. but really are not that difficult to learn. Heck I did it .lol lol.back when it was even harder than todays standards.. If you need more info. contact me..Wayne KA3TQG

Update

The morse Code requirement was dropped from the testing for a license... Also any current hams out there we do have several coonhunters or retired coonhunters that talk in the evenings on the 160 meter band. at 1.923 Mhz. from about 9pm till 10:30 pm if were not out running dogs. Also those who use echolink 2 coonhunters, myself and Don W3DDH talk during my drive time to work on the W3KWH/R 5:30 am till 6am and again at 3pm. Eastern time.. Come join us !!!

Nice to see you are a HAM... Try out echolink on the PC, 160 meters from here to Florida doesn't happen often. We would like to have you to BS hound dogs with.... Same goes for any other Coon huntin Ham out there.... If you can't get on 160 meters at night try out echolink with your computer.....

This is Diane, wife of Jim---a long time ago I had an amateur radio license under WB2JQU--however, when children came along I let it expire---must say I had
alot of fun and "talked" morse code all over the world(Australia, Oman, Canary Islands, etc. I may get back into it someday--enjoyed it as a hobby very much. There's gotta be more "hams" out there and I hope they respond.
