question for big game hunters

if you were going to start hunting bobcats with hounds...how would you begin?
what line of hounds would you start with?
how many does it take?
are there any good books on the subject?
i know nothing is better than finding someone that has been doing it successfully for a long time and just asking to tag along, but what if thats not possible?

i realize this is not an easy question to just give a simple answer to, but any advice or direction would be great.

thanks.

I won't post about what line of dogs because it's easy to tell what I hunt. I will tell you this, A really tough bobcat hound is a hound that has a near perfect blend of Nose, Brains and Athletic ability. If a hound makes just one mistake the cat is gone, If the hound doesn't have both the endurance to push a cold trail the cat is gone. If the hound doesn't have the speed to catch when the cat is jumped the cat is gone. Even more import is the ability to Locate the tree by using the scent in the air. A coon or a bear run to the tree and climb the tree leaving scent going right up the trunk. A bobcat jumps into the tree, there is seldom any scent going up the trunk. It's much like a hound treeing a cold lay up type of coon. The only way to find out if you have that type of hound is to put him/her on a bobcat track and see what happens.
Don't expect to tree them all, you will be very lucky to see half your tracks end in a tree.
Where are you going to be hunting ??

thanks Jess, sounds like a good bobcat hound is hard to come by.
i dont know a thing about it, but think it would be a nice change of pace from coonhunting.
i live in indiana, not known for bobcat hunting..lol. that being said, the dnr is saying through the grapevine that the cat population is booming quickly, and at the current pace we could very easily see a season on them in 5 yrs or so.
i would like to be in on the ground floor if that is to happen, i know that if they say they might open a season on something, that by the time they do, there will be plenty of them.
im just trying to learn something about it.
thanks for replying.

There are very few things that I enjoy more than running a bobcat, with a good hound. If you enjoy hearing a dog run a tough smart often long race you will enjoy it as well.
