? for Michigan hunters

What do most of you do from April15 to July15? I thought that since we can do damage control all year that it meant we could hunt with hounds all year , but I have heard of people getting fines for out of season hunts. I called the DNR and they are NOT vrey bright on this subject.

You can do damage control, but you cannot turn a dog loose from April 15 to July 15. The damage control can be done by the land owner or a land owner designee.
Obviously a nite hunt allows you to run the dogs, there is a permit involved. You can also get a permit for training purposes by contacting the DNR, they have a packet you have to fill out. I know a few guys that use this to at least get the dogs out occasionally. I turned mine in last year but had my drawing screwed up. By the time I got it back, season was back in. Gonna try to get it done again so this won't be an issue again.

It stinks.

My dog has been put up since April 13th. I thin he figured out how to get out of his kennel though. I seen him eyeing the latch today.

Well where I live it sucks when my hound gets loose, I hate it when she figures out how to open the gate on her kennel. Training gets kinda expensive this time of the year though lol, what with the cost of night hunts and gas, food ect. ect. ect.........

Running season starts earlier this year. It starts July 8th.

I have been trying to teach my old dogs to use a treadmill. I used to road them, but the local police said I can't due to complaints about me being cruel.

So right now I am trying to step up my fight to eliminate quiet time.

I'm sure Larry can give you the more political answer to this question but we get an extra week due the bear hunters I think because we are willing to give them a week longer in the fall???? Larry I'm sure I messed that up. Please clarify that for us. Thanks

quiet season

My brother-in-law has some land signed up as training area so we use that. And sometimes we just do not get too fussy. We stay off state land during quiet season. There are night hunts and buddy hunts. The whole idea of a quiet season is nonsense anyway. I like to run hounds in early spring when there are no leaves and no mosquitos, about the time running season closes.
I have a question for everyone that reads this post...........have you ever been hassled about violating leash law ordinances when hunting or when you lose a dog? Just wondering?

Lester,

The laws that affect hunting dogs in Michigan are the 1919 Dog Law, Wildlife Conservation Act, the Animal Cruelty Bill, and the Recreational Trespass Law.

Out of all of those 4 laws the 1919 dog law gets cited more than any due to the phrase 'in leash'. The fact is 'in leash' as it was written in 1919 simply means under control. It has nothing to do with a leash. The other part of the 1919 Dog law that many fail to consider is the hunting dog exemption.

The Wildlife Conservation Act is the law that gives us the right to free cast hunting dogs and outlines the training, filed trial, and other rules.

The Animal Cruelty Bill makes it illegal to shoot a dog and can be considered a felony. It also recognizes that hunting dogs do get lost, and that a lost hunting dog is not consider an adbandon dog.

The recreational Trespass Law allows us the right to retrieve our hunting dogs as long as the owner or land agent hasn't already told us in verbal or written word.

That is a quick overview of the dog laws in Michigan.

One thing I've noticed from hearing of different incidents is the inconsistency of the answers you get from different DNR officer's. The law is the law and fighting it will cost you but if you run into the wrong guy it seems to be what he thinks it is and it will cause you a hassle even when he's wrong.

Thanks for the info Larry. Hey Mark, sounds like you dodged a bullet. I have been pretty leery of getting out during quiet season. Having a federal job and getting caught breaking the law do not go hand in hand. One thing to pay a fine, another to get fired for a stinking misdemeanor. But the law is the law. I just hope we get that quiet season reduced some more.

Larry thanks for the update on the July 8 thing.

Have a good one fellas.

Micooner,

Interpretation. They said they had a complaint that I was forcing my dogs to run in front of my truck.
