I know this will not sound politically correct, but I've never been known for that anyway....
The Michigan State Championship has came a long way over the years. I have attended many, if not most over the past 30 years. In fact, I have a small ceramic dog that I won at the kids bench show in the early 70's. My brother Todd was interviewed on Michigan Outdoors coverage somewhere in that timeframe at a State Championship.
The numbers entered in events, numbers of people attending got larger and larger. Purina came along and made it a Purina hunt.

Then.... what happened? The numbers dropped. I hear its about the price of gas, the economy, etc, etc. I don't buy that reasoning.
I have heard several reasons for people not attending.

1)disagreement with the State Associations goals and mission compared with performance - ITS SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT COOHNHUNTING, not bear, cat, bird, etc. How much time was spent trying to legalize Dove hunting? How about working to get rid of our "closed training season"? We cant be all things to everyone. Cooperate with others, but stand tall for what the association was formed.

2) Fees: I know this is Michigan, and we tax (apply user fees) to everything. But take a look back and watch the numbers drop from the time the "you must pay to belong to the association in order to win" the State Championship title.

3) Location: When you start holding this hunt hours away from the MAJORITY of hunters in this state, you have lost entries.

So... hit me hard all that disagree. I am posting what I have been told, and my opinion. No, I do not actively support the Michigan Coonhunters Association, and for mainly the above reasons. I just hope this encourages thought to all Michigan coonhunters. We need to look at what we are doing. Maybe things need to change, and maybe not???

I for one will not attend the State Championship hunt. Good luck to those that do.

I couldn't agree more about the closed running season, why is that still the law? Seems to me that coonhunters were enticed into supporting the fur harvesters license by promise for year around running season. So what happened? The closed running season needs to go away, there is no scientific reason for it.

As far as state hunt, last nite hunt I participated in was 1980 at Lakeview. I go to hunts sometimes to shop and talk to other hunters. Have friends that nite hunt and have no issue with it, with the right cast it can be fun. Bad cast makes for a long night. I can stay home and argue with my wife and not pay an entry fee.

Wow, I don't even know where to begin with the response to Chris's post. We have reps from the Michigan State United Coon Hunters Association at meetings respresenting Coon Hunters all over this state. Meetings with the DNR, MUCC, the Michigan Hunting Dog Federation, Law makers in Lansing, and I am sure I missing a few. Not to mention the countless hours we spend on the phone fighting to keep our rights. I don't spend nearly the hours that guys like Jim Wale and Rich Porteen do who travel all over this State respenting our cause.

Just this past year we were able to slow down a law from being interduced in the Lakeview area that would have eliminated our right to retrieve in Michigan, and allow Law Enforcement to issue trepassing tickets to dog owners even if the dog was the only one who trepassed!

Did we suppose Dove hunting in Michigan? You bet we did along with every other major Hunting organization in Michigan. Why? Because we and everyone else realized that one day this could be our hunting that was under attack.

What about year around traing with
our dogs? We thought we were close a few times and the DNR backed out. Have we givenup? No way we will continue to work on this issue. We continue to work on road closures in Northern Michigan, State land usuages issues State wide.

Oh and by the way the Human Society of the United States has a full time Lobbist in Lansing. Why? The HSUS main agenda is to ban all hunting with a budget of over 100 million dollars. All dog organizations in Michigan would be lucky to come up with a couple of hundred thousand. So we yes ask you to pay $10 dollars to help us in our fought to save our rights. Guys the threat is real and it is here in Lansing now.

Thoughts like Chris Baker's are very dangerous, and yes I did take it personal because I know the work that the men and women of the Michigan State United Coon Hunters Association does for the Coon Hunters of Michigan.

Not to be disrespectful, but thoughts like those of Chris Baker's are not dangerous, they are necessary to promote dialogue and possibly make improvements if necessary or at least get out the facts. We should all speak up and air our concerns and then maybe we can acheive a collaborative solution. That is what it will take to keep the anti's at bay. I did find jeff's comments enlightening. The "right to retrieve" issue is not clearly understood. It is not mentioned in game law booklet anymore or if it is I cannot see it with my bifocals. Be nice to get that clarified, what are our rights in Michigan to retrieve a hound?

What action do we, collectively as Michigan Coonhunters, need to take to retain our rights and get the year around running season enacted and well as other rights? Any thoughts? I suppose joining a club and being more active with MUSCHA would be a good start but beign more active is a rather general subjective term.

Chris, you know for someone who hasn't attended a State meeting in years upon years and has no clue what we are doing where we are going and what we are fighting for and does not support the State Association in any way you have no right to say what you said. The State Championship is moved all over the state to give everyone a chance to be apart of this event, which is a GREAT EVENT BY THE WAY..... and yes the economy has hurt hunters all over the state and we have heard they would pick a hunt closer to home rather than driving a few hours away and we understood that. We are constantly fighting for everyone so that we can continue to do what we all love to do with our hounds. So next time you want to bash the Association back it up with facts instead of just running your mouth.....

Questions:

#1 According to the documented Constitution and By-laws the objects of the MSUCHA are:

To promote and establish good sportsmanship and fellowship among its corporate members (local coon clubs), other sporting organizations, and landowners.

To practice and encourage that national conservation of all wild game and natural resources.

To develop, promote, and encourage satisfactory standards for coon hunting.

To promote better laws to protect the sport of coon hunting.

To promote better laws to protect sporting dogs and other domestic animals.

To encourage and cooperate with the proper authorities to fulfill the goals of the MSUCHA.

My answer: Sportsmen will only be able to stop antihunters by joining forces so yes we needed to support dove hunting because each lose is one step closer to coon hunters losing their rights.

#2 Yes, the MSUCHA had struggled finaicially and we continue to search many different funding opportunities. Fighting the antihunters is not without its cost. We are fighting organizations with millions of dollars.

#3 Do you have a better suggestion that would not place additional hardships to individuals on the west or north side of the state? It is one thing to complain, and it is another thing to offer reasonable solutions.

Chris, I offer a challenge to you. If you disagree with your representation in the MSUCHA, then step up and make an effort to change it. Change is never done by complaining. Change is done by working within the system despite however flawed the system may be.

By the way Chris just in case you are wondering, I felt much the same way as you. So I got involved in the MSUCHA. Last summer I spent 3 months writting a scientific paper supporting year around training and I personally presented to the DNR. At present, I am writing a follow up letter with 2 months of research supplying additional information that supports the paper.

I would like to offer a challenge to anyone who may feel the same as Chris. If you don't like the direction of your representation then step up and do something about it!

If the MSUCHA doesn't know what is important to you by you not participating, we will never know because to date I know of no one who can read minds.

Larry and Cary thanks for those good points. My comments about Chris's thoughts being very dangerous was met to be that if everyone thinks this way and doesn't get involved then we'll all soon be hunting at our computers and not in the woods with our hounds.

Right to retrieve laws are found in the recreational trepass laws. I will research this and see if I can post this law on our State Association web site at www.micoonhunters.com within a week or so.

Jeff and Carey- Sorry you choose to take this so personal. It should not be. And I know--I should not just set here and run my mouth. Maybe we should all just tuck it up and never speak up, let others go in a direction without saying a word. No thanks, not today.
Jeff Y. - You are right in the things you say. I can agree with many of them, and many I don't. That is what this country is about. Dissent is not dangerous - blind following is. There is a place for support of others, but we need to put ourselves (coonhunters) first. Your right - we cannot fight against the money of HSUS and the other anti's. We will never win that all out war. What I believe is we can win our battle, but it must be concentrated.

Carey - First, I don't consider disagreement bashing. No, I don't attend state meetings. Neither does 99.9% of the coonhunters in this state. Does that mean nobody can voice opinion? I can back up everything I stated... and I will continue to "run my mouth"!

Larry - good points made all around. This is exactly the reason for my post. Ideas floating. I do have ideas for fund raisers, and I would fully support a full time lobbyist in Lansing, but the way things are, and have been, is not getting it done. I will consider all points in your thread, thanks.

JefferyAntes - You are so very right that we all have the right to an opinion. I have fought for mine - 4 Years US ARMY AIRBORNE, Fort Bragg NC. Served my county for 21 years with the Sheriff Dept., and served my local coon club for 7 years as an officer. If I am whats wrong, then alot needs to change. As for giving up - never have and never will. When voted from an office, I continue my support - not just quit and never show up again.

So, this has hit many hard. What thoughts have been provoked? If this thread grows, without getting deleted because someone becomes a hothead, then maybe we can find a good direction. Everyone read my first post. Those are my opinions, and a compilation of those things I am being told by other COONHUNTERS.

Chris, your right you have a right to your opion, I am not taking this personaly but we can not speak badly of others, because the anti hunters are breathing heavy down our necks. They have hired a full time lobbest in our state capital to fight to take away our hunting rights and free casting dogs in the woods. We need to ban together with ALL HUNTING GROUPS to fight against them. If it wasn't for Jim Wales, Rich Porteen and Mike Thurman from the hunting dog federation there would have been a bill to stop your right to retreive, and the next step was to take away our rights to free cast dogs. Now they are tring to take away our rights to own animals, they would only consider us their caretakers. They don't want us to even breed our own dogs let alone have them outside in kennels or on chains, and if this passes they can come take all your animals from you at any time. So tell me either be apart of this and fight with us or not at all and see what happens.........

I haven't missed the state hunt since I started going to them way back when. Im poor when it comes to politics and thats why I appreciate the ones that step up and do that job for me. I 'll be there with what I got and enter them because year after year this is the biggest hunt in Michigan and if we don't support it and those working constantly to put it on it will fade away to something us oldtimers talk about that used to be. Besides all that I go because I like it and enjoy. Most others things in that category have become either illegal or bad for me.
It's not a Purina hunt this year but I've been on both sides of that and you can't blame the Purina people hunting and showing for coming and entering because they have to if they want to compete in the Purina race. Besides everybody brings there best to you, to compete on your ground . You gotta be there or you really don't have a chance.

I have brought several ideas up to Officers of the state association, and have always been told - no we can't do that, you don't understand the politics, you have to smoose ole so and so, blah blah blah.

So, I will post some of them here and maybe one of you who is active in this association will like it.

1. Fund raisers - why just charge everyone to join? Raffles always made good money. We just quit when told we needed a permit. I'm sure a year between each hunt is enough for the application process. And as far as that goes, why not a huge raffle for tickets to be sold at local clubs through the summer, with the prize being drawn in August or so? That would raise alot more money than $10 per participant.

2. ATTACK AND FOCUS- I have been involved in the political process of government for more than 20 years. I am not a fan of setting back and doing the old give and take.
If we would focus on 1 issue and then go on the attack, we can get things done. In my opinion that would be the closed training season.
Start out with a meeting to see if that is number one in all coonhunters books. If so, have each coonhunter flood their state representives with letters and phone calls. Many don't want to have to write a letter, so a "pre written" one could be available on line. give this portion a set amount of time. No progress, step two. What does our enemy do? Protest! A very public protest to the "quiet time" would be to inform the DNR, local law enforcement and most important the media - that the coonhunters will protest a baseless law, by doing what??? Coonhunting! I don't have a problem with taking a ticket in order to fight this issue. Have this concentrated in one county at a time. Let the DNR send the boys down to write em. Flood the courts with all of us fighting the ticket. Get my point? Always being on the defensive just does not work. Give the anti's something to fight - public opinion.

So, ya there is alot of things the Assoc. can do. Its not about making a meeting 6 times a year and listening to the arguments. Its just about one thing COONHUNTING.

I would like to just Thank the ones who do come to meetings, The State Hunt, The Youth Hunt and our 1st Annual State Association Banquet this past February which was a big success, and raised valuable funds to help support Coon Hunters of Michigan. I understand that not everyone can make all of our events and meetings, but supporting your State Association anyway possible is great.

chris a couple thoughts on the raffle idea
1 there is alot more to holding a raffle than just applying for a permit
one you have to have something to raffle that people will buy tickets
for.this means either buying prizes or trying to get donations which
i can tell you from first hand experience is very hard to do and also
very time consuming.
2 what are you going to do have everyone who takes tickets to sell
be bonded? if not what happens when that one person takes off with the money that we all worked so hard to make? desperate times make
people do desperate things!
3 how do you make sure all the tickets and money get turned in on
time? how are you going to feel if you spend your hard earned money
on tickets and then you have no chance of winning? what then do you try to reimberse everyone left out? would you be willing to take on
this HUGE responsibility??

The Looking Glass River Sportsmen Club in Laingsburg, Michigan will be hosting this meeting. The last vote to change to the bylaws will be done at this meeting. Directons: 8 mi. east of Lansing on I-69 to Woodbury Rd., (exit 98),then 5 mi. north to club grounds.....

The next Michigan State United Coon Hunters Association meeting will be held on Sunday August 09, 2009 at 1pm. The Michigan Coon Hunters Association in Lapeer, Michigan will be hosting this meeting. We look forward to seeing some new faces, and more clubs represented at our meetings. The Humane Society of the United States now has a full time lobbist in Lansing we need everyone's support now more than ever, and all hunting groups need to come together.

Today we heard how HSUS is putting pressure at the local level on dog laws and local ordinances. One lady had her dogs taken away because they got wet!
