kennel shy dog..

i just got a 2 yr old redbone male.. and he is really shy. we are working on a new kennel so he is still at the guys house that i am getting him from, but when i go and see him, he is really shy.
im not sure if it is just that he is very protective of his kennel or what, because if i go in his kennel with him, he runs away when i get close, but if he gets put on a leash then he is a little better, he actually will come around and let me pet him, but he still kindof lowers his body and is shy abit.

so i was wondering if anyone new a way to break a dog of being shy around new people or in his kennel.

hes fine when hunting, its just that he doesnt like to be real crowded with new people or have people in his kennel.

Sounds like he's been beat in his kennel. The lowering of his body is a submissive posture. Just stand at the gate and call his name...kneel down so you're not projecting a dominant posture and sweet talk him. Bring treats and let him come to you.

If he was truly shy then he would act that way outside of his kennel also.

Patience, kindness and lots of treats do wonders. try hot dogs, when you approach have you palm down (non threating position). Give him time, don't push him, let him know it's ok, speak soft and gentle to him, add in praise. He needs to learn you are not going to hurt him.

I just got a 8mth. old pup. He is the same way around the kennel. I dont think the guy I got him from handled him much while rasieng him. I have been working each evening after work with him. He isnt showing much progress right now. I am gonna give him a mth. or so before he leaves my place.

I'd say he would show some progress w/in a month......if he does come out of it. Once they start to realize that your not there to hurt them it dosn't take long for them to become more friendly.....

You'll have your work cut out for you. I HATE a shy dog! Some never really warm up if they've been raised like that. How do you hunt a dog that doesn't trust you or you cant get near without it running off? I'm willing to bet there are a bunch more dogs close by you could get, and you wont have all the aggrevation of that shyness to deal with.

Those are the kind you usually catch off of a tree.
