Roost 'em at night. Get there early in the morning. If you didn't get a chance to roost them at night get the area that you know the birds are. As soon as you hear the first gooble on roost HUSTLE as quietly as you can to a close enough proximety of the bird. I like to sneak in about 75-100 yds of the bird. Let him gooble a time or two more and give him an easy yelp to locate you. When they hit the ground work him in. If he is answering you don't over do the call. I use a slate to get him close and a mouth call to finish him. If you are calling for your boy get him about 5 to 10 yds in front of you. With this technique it's hard to use decoys or blinds. You have to know your game. Know where the birds are. Some birds will hit the ground and bust tail to you Some will hit the ground and gobble their backside off going away from you. Some hit the ground and disappear. It's getting the right bird in the right place at the right time. From my experience when ole Tom likes your call (one day they might not like the slate, but they blow up when you hit a box call) he's coming. I camo up from head to toe. Turkeys have excellent vision as far as picking up movement and color contrast. Good luck.

turkey

try to roost a bird at night then get within 100yds of him in the morning, and use soft purrs, and clucks.i should have tried that this morning, instead i got cutting at them, and the hens took them away, thats why they call it hunting instead of killing.mike

Mike's right. Once, they pin point you use the easy purrs and clucks to get them in. If you run out of season and you don't have any luck get one of the CD's or VCR's and watch and listen to the different calls used. The saying is that there is no such thing as a bad call. They either like what they hear or ignore it. I'm sure your boy will have his heart pounding in his chest the first time a bird answers and starts in. Mine still does!!!!

Wade, Listen to Randy it sounds like he has killed a bird or two. Hes got good advice.

The only thing I can add is when you are callin a tom in and things arent going lickety split, and you want to move, run these words through your head......................"when in doubt, wait it out!!"

i have seen 2 toms in a cornfeild around the same spot, they roost on property i can not hunt but both times they have been spotted on property i can hunt around 8 to 9 am(corn) my son has the tag.

i'm going in early 6am setting up my ground blind, in the area they have been spotted. placing my 2 hen decoys on standing and other layed close to ground with the b mobile tom with a real fan(jake) out in front about 20 yards, going to do very little calling and just wait it out. last day and hope it works out thanks to everyone for the input

Just be where he wants to be. Find his strut zone and set up on it. They will usually make the rounds if noone has pushed them out. If you know where they are going when they fly down it makes it much easier.
