I am now getting back into showing after a 10 year absence and would like to see if any of the following handlers would consider training me over a weekend, of course not for free. I want to learn as much as possible. If any of these ladies could contact me I would appreciate it. Thanks, Janelle Parker

Kathy Shorter, Amy ( cannot remember her last name but she owns Bill), Amanda Alexander, or Janet Kirkes. These are the only ones I know of. If there are other great handlers let me know. I would love to learn more.

In my expericence, and I've only been showing for the past 2-3 yrs, the best expericence/training is to go to as many shows as possible. Take your dog w/ you and put your dog on the clubs benches. Talk to the other handlers there, especially the ones whose dog's you like, and ask them for pointers. I have found that when you show an interest in learning something, people will gladly help you, 'cause its all for the sport and the dog...not the handler.

with cynthia. go to local events and ask and observe. winning on a national level, can be deceiving as far as handlers go. doesn't make them qualified to teach either, after all, it's suppose to be the hound winning. lol! in texas, you have some very knowledgeable bench show people...am sure they will assist you on any help you would like. a few would be, sonya yearwood, hittson's, dexter whatley, pete miles (pappy)...quite a few down there. actually, some judges make great teachers as well. good luck...

Hello!

I honestly think that someone can show you how to show a dog, but you really cant learn until you learn yourself. Something that one person may show you to do, may not work for you. Just start practicing with your dog, and learn it's quirks and how to correct them. That's all I know to do.

I am not sure what part of Texas you live but if there is anything I can do to help just let me Know.My club is having a hunt and show this coming week-end at Hext, Texas,halfway between Mason and Menard and if you can make it, there should be some great handlers there that can give you tips and I will be there too.Belton,Texas is having a Bluetick sectional this week-end also and if you can make it ask for Jerry West and he will more than happy to help out.Our state hunt is coming up on the 5th and 6th of Sept. and lots of great handlers will be there.Like Christy said it will mostly come down to you and practice,practice,practice but folks can give you lots of tips that will help and will save you lots of time.If you'd rather have someone show you privately instead of at shows,I live in Goldthwaite,Texas and would be more than happy to help any day you want and there won't be any charge.Good Luck

Thanks for all your help. Some of the things I have won here in Texas are Best of Breed Texas State in 89 with a 8 month old pup. Also Queen of show that was best of show female at Cystic Fibrosis in Atlanta, Tx. in 91.and a Champion win also. I know Dexter Whatley well he would be shocked to see me back I've been gone so long from showing. Several Best Female and Male of shows and one Overall at Black & Tan Sectionals in Palestine. Also won Best of Female at Heritage. Went to louisiana in either 89 or 90 and won Best Female, male and one Champion class. But this was 10 years ago. I would like to make sure I could learn as much as possible this time I can actually afford to go to the world and want to be as good as possible. And pappy I would like to make your show but I'm going to OK to pick up my new Black & tan pup. I will look you up at Texas State I plan on being there to watch. And Pappy I just might take you up on that extra help. I don't mind being told something that might work for me. Thanks for all your help. Janelle

The show in Lexington this weekend, Texas Battle Of The Breeds, is a good one to go to. We had a good time there last year, including seeing our 7 year old son win a big champion class to finish his own dog out to grand. Then we all had to show against each other (mom, dad, and son) for the overall redbone of the show, and Jace will NOT let anyone forget he beat mom and dad!

We unfortunately will have to miss the texas battle of the breeds this year - we have to put our #1 girl Priss on a plane to go to Ohio, where Katina Childers (Tree Rizin' Redbones) is going to show her at autumn oaks and the world. I am SO jazzed that a handler like her is taking one of our dogs, although a teeny bit disappointed we won't have our BEST girl for tx state. We have our second string ch female to take though, and she's been turning some heads at the local shows, time to see if she can hold her own at a big show!
