What do you all use???................

For some reason this year the snakes have really been bad in my area. I have seen 3 since the start of spring where before I used to see maybe one. The only good snake to me is a dead snake! What do you all use around your kennels to prevent them from making a home with your dogs? I have heard you can put moth balls around the outside of the kennel to where the dogs cant get to them but it will keep snakes away. Has anyone else heard this?

Yeah they are...........

And I have seen more this year than any other time! I have 3 kids that like to go feed the dogs and work with them sometimes and to have them walk up on one would not be pretty so I need to find something that will deter them!!!!!!

Boys

killed a rattler on Monday afternoon in our back yard.....

I HATE them and pray everytime I let the dogs out that I have checked the area good enough! I would love to know there is something that would work...................I have heard sulfur.....don't know for sure. Hopefully someone else will know!

So far I have killed a copperhead behind my kennels and a cottonmouth by my grandma's rent house. My vet tells me that there is a product called "Snake Away" that has been used with success by others here in my area. I have never used it and it does smell like moth balls!!!!!!

Just a note~my vet told me (back when I was hunting alot) that if your dog was struck by a snake and lived for 30 minutes, more then likely he would make it. You would need to get antibio's for the infection of course. He was talking the larger breed dogs that I had. I wonder about my smaller hounds.......................

~~~Hopefully we will not have to find out!
Cleo we always keep Benadryl with us while hunting and if a hound gets biten we give one and take off the collars. 2 of mine got bitten by a copperhead in the kennels one morning gave em the Benadryl and took them to the vet, he said just watch them and give them another Benadryl that afternoon. Don't know if that works on rattlers though. Have you heard about the rattlesnake vaccination?
Yeah.
That's when Dr. Raulton told us the 30 minute rule.
At that time we had so many of other people dogs training in the coon pen and I was terrified one was gonna get snake bit! The pen was on the river and the moccosins were as big as my arm...I am not kidding about that either! Anyone from SC that has hunted on the Edisto will tell you that!
Benadryl is a good idea, tho! I have some (along with my Pepto) in the first aide kit for the dogs! I had forgotten about WHY it was there!
How's them pretty pups down there in TX, Jess?
I have a jagdterrier that in her younger years finished off probably a dozen+ copperheads all around the house/yard....something about copperhead venom though is it leaches the calcium out of the dogs teeth (not sure on bones) so if a dog gets copperhead bit, give her calcium for the next week...she is now 9 and has no canines left, I wish I had known about the calcium earlier...I have a young jagd that I am not sure how he will be on snakes...
Thanks for that info Blue Style. I'll have to remember that.
Cleo everybody is doin GREAT. The young one is hardheaded as ever, we've GOT to get her in the woods and spend some of that energy.
A friend of mine that's a wildlife biologist told me that copperheads breed in May around here. I just don't understand why they seem to be attrached to dogs..................................
I am in
southern Indiana. Just about an hour north of Loisville, Kentucky. I am trying to figure out something effective but not too costly.
The moth balls will work but also put out some rat poison to keep their food source away and they won't have a reason to be there
I agree that moth balls will work. There are copperheads everywhere around here, killed about 30 while hunting last year. We put mothballs around the house and buildings and haven't seen one around the house in years.
