A Tough Hunt

I was going through some old pics, and found this one. This was taken after a lion hunt a few years ago. We started this hunt well before light. Cut a female track about 7 am. So we turned the dogs loose. At the time our best lion dogs were a female 3 yrs old and my smokey river male 2 and 1/2 yrs old. We had some other dogs that hadn't been on a lion before. The green dogs pulled our young lion dogs off the track. So we got them back on track and going again. The green dogs left the track again, but my male stayed with the lion and treed her. After catching the other dogs and making it back to the truck it was after 2 pm and we had walked close to 8 miles. So we drove around where we thought we get close to the tree. The closest we could get was 3 miles away. So we got out and headed for the tree. On the walk in it got dark on us, we kept going and got within 1/4 mile of the tree. By this time we were so tired from the long day, we knew if we went the last 1/4 mile we would have to spend the night. The last 1/4 mile was nearly straight up. So we knew we had to leave the dogs ( we had turned 2 more into the tree on the walk in) and go back to the truck. That was one of the hardest things Iv'e had to do. This pic was taken on the way back to the truck. I didn't know if we were going to make it or not. It turned out we were all pretty dehidrated, that caused us to loose all energy. One of the guys was so dehidrated he wasn't able to keep any liquids down and had to go to the E.R. and get an I.V. All this and we never got to see the cat in the tree.

here is a pic of my male when he was 4 months old. he's always liked chasing cats.
