I need some help with Mastitis

Mastitis

Saturn has one brest that is not quite hardened, but does not feel normal to me...What can I do to slow or stop the mastitis from setting in. She does seem a little tender. But as I said it not exactly hard at this point....HELP !!

Anitbiotics I have here....

Lincomycin...Injectable
Gentamicin...Injectable

Amoxi...oral

Please, tell me what to do...This is horrible timing...I am running out the door as I am trying to type this because of a health issue with my father...What else !! In the morning I have to take my mom to the doctor for a follow up visit for her triple by pass surgery she just had done....THIS IS INSANE !!!!!

Give the oral Amoxicillin, drain the teat as best you can, and put hot packs on it as many times a day as you can, drain it again right after you put hot packs on it (the heat will help it to drain). If you keep right on it, you can prevent it from developing into full blown mastitis.
Keep the puppies from nursing on it (bandaids over the end work good for this).

is the milk looking like pus? if it is, remove the pups. warm compresses and antibiotics. Danny Glista could probably tell you more.

I've dealt with it before.......normally.....I would give her about 1500mg of the amox. to start off with a half of a baby aspirin which with help with pain and her fever. in another eight hours give her about 1000mg of amox and then give her 500mg every eight after that. usually she'll start feeling better in a few hours but don't be surprised if some of the infection will come out of the breast.......if it does, just squeeze out what you can. keep an eye on the milk from each one....if some milk come out yellow or like pus then don't let a pup feed from that one. hope this helps. Once she is better....I normally keep my females on 500mg a day until pups are weaned.....sometimes I'll keep them on 250mg a day....just depends on the female.

Wow, how things can go haywire in a big hurry !! I have no idea what the rest of this wonderful night is gonna bring...I hope I stay sain !! LOL...I gotta laugh to keep from crying...LOL

So from what I described ya'll think it's the beginning of mastitis? I have never had it happen before. It was the first thing that came to my mind.

I've dealt with mastitus about three times with two different dogs. In my female the problem repeated itself, even with the help of a vet. I done the pretreatment thing and it still came back. I had one successful litter with her. I had another female do the same thing. I decided from now I will not bottle feed any more, the pups will die off from the bacteria in their system. The fight is tough and I came up on the losing end and it's not worth the trouble and expense, but this is only how I feel. I personally will not breed a female that has ever had mastitus previously. Maybe things have changed and the treatments have improved in the last 10 years. I tried my hand at raising a few litters for myself and it's not too fun when problems like this happen. Best of luck to you and don't lose any sleep over something we can't control.

JUST A QUICK UPDATE AND A HUGE THANK YOU FOR ALL THE HELPFUL INFORMATION....

I know we may not be out of the woods yet, but Saturn is already doing much better...I got her to the vet yesterday and he did confirm that it was mastitis. We caught it very early. He gave me the full low down on how bad it can get, so I am fully aware of how this could have and still can go.

I just felt like I needed to give a big thanks to all that gave me such wonderful info to use. I think the fast aggressive care I was able to give her before getting her to the vet really helped...

The signs were all there for me to catch this very early...She fell off her food...She was very restless for about 24 to 38 hours before I found this. And I owe myself a big thanks for being such a sucker when she wanted to get up on the couch with me Sunday night. That is when I noticed the change in her utters.

I know this can still go bad for Saturn and the pups, but I am feeling really good about things this morning.

THANKS EVERYBODY !!

LOL, OK, saturn has gotten a head start on sleeping, I got to try and catch up...LOL

Sounds like you caught it pretty early! We have had pretty good luck with treating this problem; one of our older females contracted it. She had only had one puppy and nursed her just fine, but some of the other teats became infected. We caught it early just like you, she was on a course of antibiotics for the course of nursing the pup and did just fine getting over it. I've heard that warm compresses help, ect. we didn't try it though....Best of luck to you with Saturn, the pups and the infection!
