Shad Side Fish Bait Question

I know that Stink Bait made form Shad sides are made in Kentucky. I have went and netted Shad several times fillet off sides and placed in jar trying to make Stick bait sev eral times over the years with no luck.

Mine never turns out to be anything like the boughten kind nor are they even close to having the same smell.

I was wondering if someone may know hjow they are made and what they are mixed with when placed in the jar? Thanks for the help.

When I was stationed in Idaho we used baitfish cut up and placed in plastic bags (big ziplock type) for catfish. I think the plastic would work a little better when placed in the sun. I think the plastic would "turn" the baitfish quicker than glass.....

Why not use the stuff fresh? That is what we do around here. Seems like it works better the fresher it is for us. If you are in Kentucky, try to get some skipjack Herring and use that. Works real good for big cats. People up here can't get enough of it.

i use fresh creek chubs or sucker slabs, but i know a guy that makes his own stink bait but won't give his recipe...but i know he buries it for 3 mo. in a hole under ground until he needs it.. i think he uses peanut butter for a base with fish and blood mixed in it..

My Grandpa used to pickle the shad sides then freeze them. I found an old old cook/recipe book and had to read how to do it myself. Too much work.

I just cast net the shad and put them ON TOP of ice in a cooler. If they are in or under the ice they get all mushy and are no good.

Next scale them, and then filet the sides off.

Take the fresh cooled sides and put them in a milk jug with the top cut off. Fill it with water and freeze. Good for a long time.

Always keep shad fresh and cool or its just not the same.

Works for me.
