pup and possums

Im kinda in a delima and need some advice. i have about a nine or 10 month old walker male. Ive been taking him hunting every night for the past few weeks. Hes never seen a live coon and not that many dead ones for that matter but he is striking and runing a track a right good ways on his own but hasnt made it to a tree by hisself yet. He has ran all the way and locked down on a tree with other dogs but will not stay on it if there isnt a coon in it, he trys to keep goin and hell aventually loose it. Now I said all that to ask, Last night for the first time he treed a possum. After that i turned him loose again and he treed another one. I dont no whether to discipline him or not. I hate to cause hes not a finished dog by no means and I dont want him to stop staying on a tree cause he thinks im gonna beat him but i dont want to wait to long and make a possum dog out of him. Any kind of input from some of you veterans will be a big help. Thanks matt lewis

I'd put the leash on him and fuss at him and get out of there FAST. Once he trees a couple of coons alone and then if he trees a possum I'd get after him a lil harder.

possums usually dont climb very high.he can smell and
even see them nothing wrong with it.try turning some
coons loose in front of him take a stick beat on the tree
what ever it takes.

i came from the old school and i know i will catch crap for this but .. i would pet him up.. you can break him off them latter. you want him to tree and that is the hardest part of it all.. when he is treeing every time out then work on the this is ok and this is not thing.. but the main thing is at this point dont scold him at the tree just yet.

if this dog has seen and ran coon already, i would get his mind off of possums as quick as possible..just don't do it at a tree..turn him out on a possum out in a field somewhere where it can't climb a tree..when he grabs it light him up or knock him to the ground..

Got to know what to do before you can stop doing what not to do.

I'm with Trueblue get that pup treeing on his own with confidence. When he finds out you don't want nothing but coon he will tree nothing but coon.

I agree with HOBO & Burdette on this one.....

whatever you do NEVER shoot the pooum down to him and hit him with it.....I would just fuss over it and let him now it is wrong....

what I like to do is use a skinny switch/twig. At his age I wouldn't though....once he finds that interest in coons It most likely won't be any problem because coons are more fun....

good luck!
happy hunting and take care

If the dog has a lot of natural tree power I wouldn't suggest this only because In MANY instances, I have seen it lead to making a dog "ouchy" at the tree with other dogs. They are just so excited they start grabbing anything with in reach, even if it becomes your hand.....

possum cure.

Get a possum put it in a cage or trap, get yourself a shock collar and use it!make that dog run the other way when he smells or sees a possum.shocking is alot safer than wipping and beating a dog plus he doesn't know your the one shocking him!whipping and beating could turn him timmid especially doing it while hunting him.

take a electric fence charger make about a 24-30 inch circle with the wire about 6 inches of the ground. put a fresh killed possum in the circle. turn the dog out where he can find it on his own preferably in a large fenced in yard. do this a few times over a couple months he wont mess with them any more. will work for deer too

right, you guys are like us with a slim coon population making
it more difficult 2 get a pup going this time of the yr with the
frost on and everything.i would ride the rds dump out on
some and knock them out to him.

good advice, he'll think the possum has a mean bite and won't want anything to do with it. but I take it one step further and when you see he's even thinking about grabbing that possum shock him. make it so the thought doesn't even cross his mind.
