I have squirrel hunted some of my coonhounds for over 40 years. The key on whether to do it or not is the nose of the hound. If it has fairly hot nosed stock behind it, squirrel hunting and then coon hunting the dog will work. If it is out of cold nosed stock, starting the dog on squirrels won't work because they will be treeing cold squirrel tracks way after night has fallen. I have started many, many coonhounds on squirrel, made good squirrel dogs out of them, then just showed them a couple of coon, and had a decent coondog then. Any dog that can consistantly tree squirrels and have the meat, can tree coon. Again, the key is the dog's nose. It doesn't work with cold nosed dogs.
You might look at my Mini-Mouse thread on this board. Mini only needs $35 to finish as a PKC Squirrel Dog Champion and I am confident I could win Nite Hunts with Mini. She would split tree with the meat just like she does in the day hunts.
