The first time...
The first time I ever went coonhunting...
I got a job working for a county road dept. and met a guy that coonhunted. Well, I didn't know anything about it and had to see what it was all about. I had hunted other critters all my life, but never coons. Well, I bugged the crap out of this guy, I hope he doesn't mind if I call his name, Tommy Tipton, finally got tired of listening to me and agrred to take me hunting one night. I met him and his dad, George Tipton, a great man and a die-hard coonhunter, at thier house and away we went. We turned out a couple of English dogs, NtCh. Tip's Kentucky Jack and Muggs. Each hound struck it's own track. I was thrilled. Jack took his track deep, while Muggs stayed a little closer. Jack finally treed and it was agreed that Tommy and I would go to him, while George stayed with Muggs. After walking what seemed like forever, over every hill and holler in Ky. we finally arrived at the tree. We saw the coon right away. Jack was treed on a small tree that leaned out over a creek, about 12 feet below. Tommy asked me to walk Jack down into the creek so that when he shot the coon Jack wouldn't bail off the bank and get hurt. I was ready to help. I took Jack's lead and started looking for a place to get down. I put one foot on the bank and all of a sudden it gave way. Jack and I went down head over feet into the creek. SPLASH! We came up blubbering and soaked to the bone. January in Ky. is cold and the water was colder. Tommy made sure we were OK and knocked out the coon. We started back to George and Muggs, who by this time was treed and had a coon of his own. My clothes were frozen, I was frozen and miserable. We finally got back to George, got Muggs' coon and went home. I took alot of good natured ribbing, but these are good people and were a little worried about me. To me none of that mattered. I was hooked. The next day at work, I asked Tommy when we were going again and he looked at me like I cross-eyed. He said that after last night he figured I would never talk to him again. Fat Chance. We have been best friends for about 25 yrs. now and although we live in different states now, we still get together and hunt and reminisce about that hunt.
How was your first time?
