when hunting one hound by itself? Went hunting couple nights ago before bad weather came. It was 2 other buddies taging along with me and my bluetick gyp Belle. We made a walk hunt up a good little mountain creek valley. One of my favorite walk hunts and its close to the house. Its got a little creek with grapevines and lots of white oaks and it always holds coons. Kinda like one of my little spots I keep to myself. I've never been real big on hunting a pile of dogs to tree a coon. My gyps going on 5 1/2 and shes in her prime and 95 % of the time when im hunting shes the only dog. I love her shes a great coon hound. Doesnt run trash, when she barks its a coon without a dought and shes always done her part of puting coons up. We had made the hunt treed in 3 trees had one coon in the 1st and 2nd trees 3 in the lasts. It was a great night of hunting and as we started out of the woods between us and the truck with about a mile walk out a pack of coyotes start just going crazy. I kinda laughed and told the other guys that i was glad they tagged along with me and Belle.

I was just wondering and thought it would be a interesting subject If any other hunters in there experiences have had coyotes gang up on a single dog hunting??? Thanks

I've heard people say that they have had problems before, but I've never had any problems with them... seems like sometimes that they are within 40 yards, but never came completly in on me.

Make the hair on your neck stand up though!

Had 3 eat up a walker dog while on an akc hunt, they got him bad, had to carry him out lil over a mile and know one would even help me go find him, but anyway i`ll kill any yote i see...

reason i brought this up is a Guy had a dog working a trail and she treed it. He was headed to the tree and she was doing her thing chopping em off and then he said he heard her stop barking and then the dog started squalling like it was getting attacked and not treeing a coon. He ran as fast as he could but when he got there the coyotes had done streched her out and she was dead. He was in preaty rough shape over the dog from what i hear. I didn't know the guy one of my buddies told me about it.

I've never had any problems with them bothering a big male dog but once i was hunting 2 gyps and they went different ways one of them treed and after we got to the tree there was no sign of the other gyp got back to the truck still havent heard a sound from her took out the tracker and just started to track her when the phone rang it was a guy that lived up the road said he found a hound in his garage that seemed scared to death and yea it was the littler gyp, this gyp is a real coondog never seen anything like this before and hasnt happened again we figured coyotes got after her but really dont know for sure...

Had a gyp when i was little. She struck a was working a good track over and all of a suddend she shut up 5 mins went by and no sounds and then i heard something runing in the leaves i fliped my light on and it was my gyp running to me. About the time i grab her a snaped her on the lead a coyote not 60 yards from where she came let out a howl. Scared my buddy me and the dog. But they didnt harm her. But they did bother her enough to make her stop working a hot track. She was just a shaking and nervous as heck. Bout messed her head up the rest of the night. We did managed to tree a few that night.

it 3 times that the dogs where ate by the yots while they where being shoot over by 22 while walking in they never payed aney mind to the gun till one was shoot.i keep a lite on mine now that flash lite

I've had yotes come in on one dog alot. every dog I've had so far has been smart enough to run away.

never had a dog seriously hurt by them but thats just luck -
have had a few dogs traumatized lol


the last time was last nite


was runnng 2 beagles and it got dark--- hollared to them-- shot up in the air-


one came rite to me , i tied her to a tree and kept after the other

was close to him , he didnt want to quit -


then a coyote started howling , very close, coyotes howling doesnt bother me- i sorta like it ,, but this one way too close to be normal-




i didnt know what else to do - lol id already hollared and shot-

did it again anyway. lol



--i heard one funny yip -after he stopped running - not his normal bark at all

walked towards him ,fast as i could on snowshoes ,with the beeper ,

kept hollaring

he came into me -acted scared
- then he was boogie barking at my other beagle that i had tied to the tree-

he is not a spooky , booger barking dog-

coyote scared him , if i hadnt been close, mite have killed him-

they are definately bolder ,as soon as it gets dark -


they are hunted pretty hard with dogs here, normally they are dog shy -

i was in sort of a roadless area that coyote hunters avoid-

.....have a friend that lost a good pup to them last year..........pup split treed about a quarter mile from the other dogs..........they heard the yotes start up............by the time they got there it was over.................Oglethorpe County, Georgia.................we never had a problem till about 5 years ago........our group of 5 killed 9 while deer hunting this year.......

I to hunt a single hound most of the time...In the past 10 years I have had my hounds chased out of the woods by coyotes twice, not a pleasant experience..

My only problem is that allot of the ones here have huge holes in their sides...................

..right after a 50 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip moving at 3400 fps. out of my .223 impacts their body forcing hydrostatic shock through all of their internal organs Tee Hee :P

We have had dogs run off by them a lot. Had them come into a tree one night when my nitech split treed. They came close enough I could here the grass movin and he quit treein turned his butt to the tree and started growlin. Our other dog has been run off several times by yotes. They are becoming a big problem this year since the gas prices were to high to hunt them hard last winter. There seems to be a lot more of them around here now.

I had my NTCH female tore up by yotes this year over in IL at a comp hunt. She was treed in deep and we were shining another tree by the time we started heading towards her she stopped treeing and I withdrew to find her. Figured something had to be wrong she does not leave trees. Found her hiding about a 1/2 mile away in a junk pile. Had holes in her back end and bleeding. Luckily the guy that was guiding had some BP 48 and I was able to give her a shot quick and squirt some in the puncture wounds. I have had her run into yotes a couple more times now and every time she gets close to one she comes straight back to me. I hunt her alone a lot but she is also very independant and would just as soon tree by herself.

Here in southern Ontario the coyote population is huge and it is constantly a problem when I run the coon hounds. See them and hear them chatter at the dogs all year round. But the months of august & september seems to be when they attck the dogs the most. Had several dogs cut up and a couple bad ones where the male dogs testicles were torn off or damaged. This seems to be where they always go for

The other night I was driving to get my kid from swim practice and had the dog with. Three or four coyotes crossed the road at a stop sign and the dog started going nuts. Those things stopped in the middle of the road and started yippin' and howlin' at her. She didn't get scared it just seemed to piss her off even more and she started bayin' and trying to climb out the window.

I'm used to seeing them trot down the road where I lived in Holly MI. They did it every garbage night in the winter right past my house but this was nuts. I was at the edge of town.

Yotes are a problem here as well. They do get close and make me a little nervous but generally they don't catch the dogs. Alot of times it seems the dogs know when to say quit and come back to us. With that said though I have had a female caught by one while hunting her by herself and the damage was bad. We were fortunate to save her but they tore her up bad. Stayed at the vets for 3 weeks and two surgery's. She has a limp and favors her back leg all the time. It also took most of the hunt out of her. She will go but stays close now and I can't say I belame her. Run a lighted coller on your dog at all times and we have even put small bell's on the collers too. When they attacked her I shot a pistol several times in the air and it scared them just enough to get her time for me to get her. This was several years ago before the lighted collers were as common as they are now. Hope this helps you.

Here in Oklahoma we have coyotes as thick as fleas. They bark and raise cain but I almost never have any trouble with them. I've had them get real close and intimidate a dog but never had one hurt by one.

bad yote problem here but sinse using the lighted collads they don't come into the hounds now i won't release a hound without a lighte collar. here most of the yoted are crossed with the red wolf and are big yotes
yotes crossing with domestic dogs is not possible they only can cross with the red wolf

I have had coyotes run dogs off of trees in the summer when they got treed too close to a den with pups,but had never had any problem in the fall or winter until recently.
A couple weeks ago we had a coyote jump on a beagle in the middle of a field while we were rabbit hunting.
I had 3 beagles running loose here at the house,one has been missing for about a week and a 1/2.
This past Friday the dogs woke me up about daylight.They were going nuts.I grabbed a rifle and went out to see if I could figure out what was going on.
The two beagles that I had left were barking towards the woods and acting plumb crazy.I started following them and they would stay in front of me about 10 feet and bark.
I followed them back in the woods to where it dumps off in a big holler behind the house.
My two beagles took off down the hill to the bottom of the holler and started up the other side.
A coyote met them about halfway up the other side and grabbed one of my beagles.They went rollin' and squalin' to the bottom of the holler and disappeared in a ditch.My other beagle ran to me and stood at my feet booger barkin'.
The coyote popped out of the ditch and came runnin' towards me a figurin' to get my other beagle.
He got about 20 feet from me before he figured out the beagle was standing at my feet.
He turned inside out and took off,I never did get a shot off.
The beagle that the coyote chewed on was back at the house covered in coyote slobber.

A friend of mine had a young dog "attacked" by a yote last summer. We were hunting one night and the dogs went into a swamp, my older male dog and an older female dog were running a track and this guys young male dog was in there somewhere wasnt making any noise, when i noticed the yotes started "yippin" and then my older dog quit trailing and came running back to me with his hair standing up on his back ( He's only came back to me 1 time in a year usually I get this dog off a tree somewhere). Well the female dog eventually got treed like 2 miles from the swamp. Still no sign of the young dog. My friend started tracking him up Indian Creek figuring the dog may have somehow drown. When he finally found him he was backed up in some brush on the edge of the creek. He was covered in blood and shaking. The yotes had started trying to eat his hindquarters but i guess he either got away or something ran them off. The dog is fine now tho. He was mentally shaken up for a month or so and physically for a few weeks but now he's running his own tracks a split treeing.

The best yote is one with a hole through both sides and smoke coming out of one of em'! LOL I just bought a .17HMR to take care of some of the population during the day on some of our hunting spots.
