It's cold out - Look after your hounds

Hey everyone, it's extra cold out so do what you can to keep your hound as warm as possible. I hate to hear the term "Winter Kill". Theres no excuse for it. Buy a new insulated dog house, put a flap door on your old one, change the bedding to keep it lofty and dry, anything you can to keep your hound warm and happy this winter. Your hound will do anything for you, and just likes to be loved by you and your family. They deserve the same from us. Do what you can to keep them warm...keep plenty of unfrozen water for them, feed em extra at night (a full belly is a warmer hound), and just look after them. This isn't directed at anyone, just that I came in from changing the beding in my hound's houses and figured I'd post a reminder. Happy Holidays.

I'll second that. It's been bitter cold here the last couple days.....We give ours fresh water three times a day, divide their feedings into three meals and also give new straw about once every two weeks. Before it gets really cold out we always do an "inventory" on all the doghouses and inspect for any splits, cracks, leaks, ect. and get it fixed before the weather gets too bad. The last meal of the day for the dogs is soaked in hot water also, they LOVE it. I get peace of mind knowing that they go to sleep on a full, warm belly. Also, the extra moisture helps them stay hydrated in turn helping them stay warm.

We also hunt 3-4 nights a week if not more. It seems that if they are active, their bodies are more able to function and keep warm.

Have a Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone!

I have a 6 month old and an 8 week old that just run loose all day and night. When it is real cold they get in the house with one of the old dogs. Funny seeing them all try to get out of the house at once.....

Truly though, I make sure they have a good house, a flap, a feeder, water, and a four leaf clover for luck. I sure don't lose sleep over it.

I have heated pads in the dog houses with plenty of straw and flaps over the door and have heated water bowls. They come out at feeding time and stretch. There belly is warm because they dig down to the heated mat. I put a roof over the kennel because I don't like to shovel the snow out and the kennels have lights when needed. What else could a dog ask for except air conditioning in the summer. No way.
