he is buying for low prices. Take you fur to a state auction if you can. Or find a good local buyer.

I have in the past . But i will not ever again . But we are fortunate enough to have a buyer near here that treats us a little more fair ,no games . We have had him price a group of furs to one guy ,my hunting partner, he refused the amount he offered and picked them up and left . Then we had a buddy , a fresh face to Gronewald ,take the same lot of furs for him to price them and it was unbeliveable the amount that he offered him for the same furs !! He always pays more the first time, he gets new people to come back thinkin they will bushel the next time they sell the better hides but he always pays less your second trip. When you show up with your bigger and more prime hides.Ive been coon hunting since ive been around 10 years old and im 47 now so i know what a good hide is nuff said .If thats the only buyer in your area then youll have to settle i dont blame you that you dont want to be running all over just to sell your hides. I hope you all dont think i figure im gonna get rich on hides cause thats not why i hunt .

My partner and I have sold to him for years. He has always treated us well and we have almost always topped the market, or what we hear around here. We take good care of our hides and he likes that. I dont think he likes it when others come in with muddy or burred up hides. Last batch we sold averaged $10.20

3WKS AGO

I SOLD 16 3WKS. AGO RIGHT AT A 13 DOLLAR AVERAGE. THEY WERE SOME NICER COON. I SOLD SMALLS AND JUNK ALL TOGETHER, HAD 22 AND AVERAGED $5.35 ON THEM. THAT WAS RIGHT AT THE SHOP IN FORRESTON. GOOD COON ARE WORTH DESCENT MONEY.
COMB A $2.00 COON ALL DAY LONG AND HE IS STILL A $2.00 COON. I'M LIKE MARTY, I LIKE TO HANDLE FUR AND TAKE CARE OF IT. NOTHIN PRETTIER THAN A PILE OF WELL HANDLED COON HIDES. TOMMY DAY IS THE BUYER FOR GROENY THAT I HAVE SOLD TO FOR QUITE A FEW YEARS. HE PAYS ME WHAT THEY ARE WORTH.
AND KNOWS THAT WE KNOW FUR. I HAVE SEEN SOME ATROCITIES IN FUR BUYING AS FAR AS BUYERS KNOWING THAT THE SELLER KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT FUR, THEY DO TAKE ADVANTAGE OR SHOULD I SAY BECOME SHRUDE BUSINESSMEN. <v>

Groenwald is one of, if not the biggest buyer in North America. dont think that the country buyers or buyers at the state auctions are going to be to far off of Groenwalds prices.

I suggest finding somebody to scrape and dry your hides. Most of the buyers around here are paying $2.50 more a hide for dried goods.

It will increase your average by increasing the size.

Thanks for all the replies. I sold to them last year and did really well. I dont kill many. I would rather run them again. However the ones I do kill I would like to get payed fair. Our local buyer is payed 3 to 6 dollars and always has. Even last year when I was getting 14 average at Groenwald, local guy was paying 5.

Groenwald usually tops the market, but this year he says he cant compete with the local buyers. Most the local guys are buying them for investments and gonna wait till next year to sell them. With Groenwald I took 51 coons in the first week which were mostly junky yellow coon and avg. 10. Next week I sold 28 which were a little better and only avg. 6. He is a math wizard and knows what your going to avg. as soon as you pull in. Thats why he asks you how many you have, that way he knows how many to put in each size pile. To get the best prices always sell every chance. You will make more money selling little batches, then taking in a pile of fur at once. With little batches you know better what you have and what they are worth, with a big batch it is harder to keep track and he is going to take you on some. The old man is back to buying around here. Ive been selling to a local guy now that has been doing a good job and will wait till next year to go back to Groenwald and see what he is paying. I agree with Perry and Marty and always try to make mine look good. They like the combed out fur alot better and you will see it on your avg.

Just how much do you know about the fur market? I have been around this all of my life, I bet I probably have a good idea about the situation.

Maybe you need to do some thinking!!!!

I like to local auctions, and here is why. I like to take my time and put up our fur. I even size and grade them myself. In an auction, if the buyers notice your fur they will some times fight over it.

I have taken fur to a local buyer and not sold any, and then have that same buyer out bid everyone else at the auction. Another thing I like about the local auctions is it often supports the local area better.

Putting up fur is a lot of work and time consuming, My hats off to those that do it, but I would rather spend the time hunting.

Fur grading is not an exact science, Im doubt you would ever have the same buyer grade 100 coon the same way twice.

I have sold to Groenwald several times and never felt cheated.

Mt experience with Groenwald is that they pay top dollar for the best stuff and nothing for the rest. We have 4 local buyers within half hour drive so I got some options. But they all pay about the same. This year, for whatever reason, all my coon are small and nobody is paying much for small coon. I took 14 to the closest guy last week and got 5 bucks apiece. That's fine with me.

I have always sold to Groendwold except this year because They were not paying dirt for coon. So I went to a local buyer and he treated me really good. He told me the bank gave him the ok to buy 10,000 coon this year and that he was just buying on the futures market right now because there really is not a market for coon right now.

I'm hearing about $10 average as of this week across the board from local buyers. I think they're might be some truth that they are buying for next year.
I don't know much about Groenwald. I've heard too many horror stories to even give them a try. They aren't any more convienent to me than the local buyers. If they were I'd give them a shot.

(Quote)prices not what preseason quotes where thought to be

that magizine says same thing almost every year fur will bring big money and the samething happens all the time

as far as groenwald goes i had went to one of his locations and he must of had a rough day cause he low balled me on the price
now not all of the hides i had taken to him where prime but i had a good year with big coon and he just wasnt interested in looking at my good piles after looking at my ok piles he gave me a price and said take it or leave so i loaded them up and went home the next day a different buyer for him was in another town so i loaded them up and went to him wow my price went from a $9 the day before to a $15 avg. over night so i told him what had happened the day before and he didnt have anything to say so i took a chance and went to my local buyer that i had sold to for 10 years and he looked at the best and the worst and gave me a $18 avg with my best hide being $35 and the lowest being $5 so i told him about my time with groenys buyers and he just said lesson learned and i said yep

i learned that if you treat your local buyer good he will do the same for you when i take my hides to him they are dry and combed layed flat in the frezzer my buddys dont take the five extra mins. to comb out the hide and get mad when there avg. is $5 less then mine

Well, I've read this post and others similar to it. For those that are knowledgable......what is the best way to handle your fur to maximize your price?? Honestly, I usually wad them up in a ball and freeze'em. I know there is a better way. Someone enlighten me on some fur care here, please!!! Thanks in advance.
