weird phase

Anyone ever have a hound go through a weird phase. every once in a while my dog just does not want to hunt. he's been treeing his own coon since he was 11 months old. Been running and treeing drags since he was 5 months old. But, 3 times since he was a pup he simply did not want to hunt. I'd lead him to the woods and he get this look in his eye. A look that says, 'yea right I'm not hunting tonight! Forget it!' Like I said, this has only happened 3 times in his life. Seems a little weird. Some people would beat the dog for this. once he even jumped back in the dog box when I was trying to hunt. Wonder if something spooked him? Wonder if he smelled off game? He has never ran trash. Has treed a few opposums though.

Also, he's good for one dump at a place most of the time. Once he trees a coon and it's dead he walks with me all the way back to the truck. I don't need a leash. He walks right beside me. He doesn't want to continue hunting in the same location. It's like he is automatically tuned to go back to the truck after every tree.

When he was a little pup 3 or 4 months old I'd walk him every day 2 or 3 miles a day just for exercise. Some people say this is why he walks back with me. he's used to staying close. But, when he hunts he does not always stay close. there have been a few times where he went very wide.

wondering if any of you out there have had any of these same experiences? Did you dog turn out to be an exceptional hound? Or, a mediocre one?

I have had this happen with mine on several occasions. He's a strange little bird but he generally gets the job done and works hard doing it. However, there have been times it was like he flat refused to hunt. I am a firm believer in the solunar tables and their correlation to game activity. I found the times he would not hunt were the times with the poorest activity times for game. May be a nothing but it gives me something to keep form choking him.

dogs aren't robots. They have bad days too. There's some days I just don't feel like doing much but laying around.

solar calendar

the last night I took him and he wouldn't hunt; it was a bright, freezing, full moon night. I think it was more my fault for taking him. I didn't punish him at all. I just let him load up, brought him home, and fed him like normal. Patted him on the head. Let him out of the box and loaded him in the kennel without a leash. he handles like a dream. I'd be a fool to get rid of him. I'm just a pleasure hunter anyway.

I don't think he'll ever make a gr. nite champion but who knows

thanks for your replies.
