Garmin Astro base question

My Garmin base has been acting up. If I turn it on in the woods, and then turn it so it lights up, as soon as the light part shuts off, the whole base shuts off. If I leave the light off, it will stay on. I thought it was just bad batteries but have changed them to new ones and then even to different kinds of batteries it still happens. Not that I need the light on but I don't want this to be the start of a string of bad problems. Just wondering if any one else has any trouble with theirs acting the same way? Any suggestions?
