getting weight on dogs..

been having trouble getting weight on dogs since it turned cold. have been through Diamond Naturals, Purina One, Native, and beginning on Diamond green bag. dogs are not hunting so not using excess energy. been on each brand for a few weeks so time was given to see if it worked. not wormy, normal amount/quality of stools. the only one this has been good for is the overweight one!

bout embarrassed to let anyone see them. the get4-5 cups per day each.

any suggestions to getting weight on?

Don't feel to bad it happens. Our 75lbs male every time it turns cold we have to bump his food up alot to keep the weight on him. Last winter we had to go from 3-4 cups of food in the summer to a fattier food and 12 cups a day. And even at that he still looked thin. Same thing is happening again this year. Took his stool to the vet cause they didn't believe us. And his stool is perfectly normal, just bump up their food untill they start putting on weight and adjust it as needed.

yeah having them checked for worms is a good idea. they could have tape worms. i use a wormer from my vet that kills ALL worms EXCEPT tape worms. i feed Sportsmix and do believe it to be the best dog food on the market. i have no problems keeping weight on my dogs reguardless of how much i hunt them. when i get one that needs a little extra i will add a couple of eggs to their food morning and night. if you do a lot of cooking you could try pouring some bacon grease on top of their feed as well. i have also gave them table scraps as well, and it works. you could also try putting them on an automatic feeder for a while to let them have free choice to all the feed they want. i also feed sportmix i keep my dogs on full feed yr round in the winter i feed the 24/20. used to be like you with thin dogs not anymore. you will use more feed the first 7-10 days then they level off and you will feed less they nibble off and on instead of power eating in a few minutes. I built my self feeders for about 10$ each

you can't go wrong with the Sportsmix!! green bag during the summer hotter months and the blue or black bag during the winter colder months!!

Its not the dog food. Try feeding 4-5 cups of feed two times a day(morning and nite). Feed at nite for energy to stay warm through the cold temperatures. Stack your dog houses with a good straw for proper bedding where the dogs body heat builds in his box to help stay warm day and nite. You could also take a rug and cover the dogs door to block the heat from escaping. "Major factor", make sure your dogs have good clean water 24/7 meaning your breaking ice morning and nite befor and after work or your pouring new water in bowls several times a day. Water is a major source of body heat.
It takes longer for a dog to fatten up than it does to loose weight in certain cases. Any of the feeds your talking about should work. Table scraps will help a little.
1)Proper hay in the box.
2)feed double day and nite until you reach proper body weight
3)more than enough water
4) make sure they stay dry and out of the wind.

Good Luck

Google something called "Miracle Balls." Its made out of ground beef, oatmeal etc. You can make a batch up and freeze part. only have to feel a small amount a day. It will help with weight as well as a boost during hard hunting. Full of protein, not too expensive to make.

Good luck!

I've used them for puppies. If you use a heat lamp you need a big enough house to let them get farther away from the lamp if it gets a little toasty. Also without the heat light the smaller the house the better. With a flap over the door the dogs body heat heats the house. The smaller the house the less calories the dog has to burn to heat it. The more calories your dog burns to stay warm the more they have to eat. I'm suprised the only heat lamp reccomendation came from florida. I live a little north of florida and have a problem keeping dogs cool in the summer.

worm 'em and put the feed to em. It takes more feed to keep the weight on em in the winter since they are using energy to keep warm
