I have no doubt that up North there are alot of great dogs. Yet I know for a fact, by expeirence it is easier to tree coons up North due to the amount of coons. I challenge any hunter from the North to come to Oklahoma, Arkansas, or Texas and hunt with a great dog down here. I am not going to say that the southern dog will beat the brakes off a Northern dog, but I believe that any dog that can Grand Night in These three states will be a great dog anywhere as where a Northern dog may have trouble in being very competitive down here. Id say the best way is to possibly have a qualifing hunt in the Northern States and take the top four dogs from up there and the top four dogs from down here and find out.

Im mainley directing "North" to places like Indiana, Ohio, New York, Pa, and Illinois its to easy to tree coons up there.

If a hound that is hunted in the north has the drive to go until treed I think he can do the same in the states that you mentioned!! In reality it comes down to drive in your area to where a hound has to go find a single track how ever far he has to go and tree it!! In our area a hound has to have brains to be able to unravel a bunch of tracks criss crossing themselves , hot or cold and put a coon up a tree a biggest % of the time!! It's a lot easier to run a single track and put an end to it than it is to go through a maze of tracks and find the right tree!! One track leading to a tree and the coon climbs!! No problem!! I'm in!! Ohio!! Give us northen boys a break!! LOL

I like the discussion here. Makes it all worth while as long as nobody gets mad. Opinions are what makes coonhunting worth sitting and talking to everyone about. And maybe us Southern or central so to speak boys need to come up North and do a little dog trainin'!!! lol

I just hunted on the missori arkansas boarder and saw alot of coon compared to central ny , but my dog looked like crap down there,i blamed it on the 16hr ride ,but maybe there harder to tree down there, but there wasn't a lack of coon. i think each state has its good areas and bad .

For all those that haven't hunted in Coldwater, MI, make sure you wear gloves, don't touch nothing, and make sure your bladder is empty..............makes for a long miserable ride home back to FL

You bring up a very interesting point but it can go both ways and I know this for a fact!! I purchased a top hound from Al. that had won in UKC and PKC in the south and she was a Grnite and Silver ch. Blue dog owned buy a very respective breeder when I purchased her. Just a little over $2000 to make gold!! She was and still is a top hound! She has the drive to tree coon anywhere!!When I brang her here to the north she looked bad, but not for too long!! She had to adjust to having all the track on the ground and finding the right tree! If you took a weekend and hauled her north to a hunt, you would get beat 90% of the time!! To be honest with ya, at one point I wanted to give her away because she just couldn't get the job done right in the north so called easy coon treeing country!! Long story short she did adjust and won 4 of her last 4 cast in PKC!! Now this female had been in the top 16 in Al. state race 4 years and had world and truck tickets won also!! Ya see, hounds that have it bred in them just have to adjust!! Some don't!! Waiting for your response!! Thanks, Danny G. PS!! The hound, Grnite ch. PKC Sch. Crosby's Blue Snooter!! I still own her today!! Real nice hound that is a great reproducer!!

I agree with you 100%. DOgs that are bred to tree coons are most of the time going to tree coons. And the difference in country, number of coons play a huge factor in the style a dog hunts. I went to Indiana and hunted for 3 hours and treed 11 singles and 3 doubles. Our dogs were going crazy up there in coon haven. I have never done that in Oklahoma. So I would have to say I agree that the difference in country is Id say 85% of the ability a dog has to tree a coon anywhere. Also I have to point out that dogs that are Smokey River or Neosho River or Briar Creek bred are all originating down here. What is your views on that?

I've never hunted in Oklahoma, but have hunted in a lot of
other States Including Florida and Arkansaw and never had
a dog have any trouble treeing coons any where I've been.
I have had dogs from Alabama, Arkansaw, and Missouri that
I gave at least two months hunting that just couldn't tree
coons in Wisconsin. The one from Alabama went to Ohio after
I brought him back and the guy called me to see why I brought
him back because in Ohio he was a coon treeing machine. Why
he could do it in Ohio and not Wisconsin I don't know!!

NEOKHUNTER, they have done just what you want. They call it the world hunt. Three of the four dogs in the final were from the north and the other was from W.V and some say that is the north. Look at the dogs that make the final in all the world hunts the dogs from the north have more than held their own year after year. I have hunted all the states you talked about and can tell you first hand the dogs are no better than up north. We have 8 in. of snow on the ground here bring your best and lets see what it can do. My dogs will tree coons in this weather. Half of our season is in this kind of weather. The seasons in the south is a cake walk when you look at the two. Your weather is great down there when you look at ours. I have had many dogs from the south and most of them are NOT the dog here that they are in the south. Some of them do come around but most never make the grade up here that they do down south.
