indiana hunters

is there a legal way to kill coons out of season. i know you can take a coyote or varment year round if it is destroying property, but do coons count and if so can you use dogs. i just dont feel like getting stopped by the game warden again this summer.

JR.

I don't think there is any way to take coon legally in IN. with a dog out of season but you could ask the local DNR officer to find out. It can't hurt to ask they can't do anything for just asking.

I askd the dnr the same question. I had several guys that wanted me to hunt and I was told I coulnt if I didnt shoot the coon. I have too much to lose if I was to get caught. I was considering getting a nuisance permit and was told that you could not get that permit and use dogs to eliminate those animals.

Its called like a jepradation or something like that, but yes I had a farmer get one of those permits for me a decade ago and used it during the summer coon hunting on his farm.

Brad, that’s a “Depredation Permit” and you could have been arrested. Depredation Permits do not cover killing coons out of season with a hound. Read up on the law and note the terminology, “using legal methods”. Taking coons with hounds out of season is not a legal method.

You can check with Chris

Hey Jerry, thanks for the pointer, I did this like 12 years ago and being ignorant I hunted with it. I guess I am lucky I did not get arrested.

jking I would ask you as a fellow hunter and houndsman from the Hoosier state to follow our laws outlined in the DNR. Openly saying you are going to take coon out of season with CBs puts a bad name and label on the coon hunters and I don't want to be associated with the bad name. It makes me feel embarrassed and disappointed that I hunted with a permit 12 years ago but it was done innocently. If we want things to change for our sport then we have to change things by obeying the law. Think about it!!

i never openly said i would take a coon out of season. just because someone uses a certain type of ammunition doesn't mean they are taking game illegally.
