One of the saddest things that I see over and over again in this sport is some poor hound standing in his own crap in a 6x10 pen and the owner says " he has only been out 3 times in his life'' ... It about makes me sick.. It is like a prison sentence to hell for that dog..

Bottom line is ,, dont buy them unless you intend to use them AND dont breed them unless there is a desire to own them and a use for them!!!!!!!

Good post Ron......

Ron, I agree with you, I catch myself seeing alot of real good bred pups on here and think man I need to get one of em but know I wouldnt be able to give em the chance they deserve..

I have a 12 and 9 month old that are out of my females that need more time in the woods than I've been able to give em and it would be plain stupid on my part to get another pup untill these 2 are trained..

great post!!

I also agree with you, that's why I have only one for now. Went half on a pup last year and before we got home from the Grand American my buddy talked me out of my half. His daughter loves the pup, and we run it with my dog so I get to see her progress anyways. With work and college I only have a couple nights a week to go, so there is no way I could hunt 4-5 dogs. Unless I hunted all of them at once, then knowing my luck they would split in 4-5 different directions and all be 1-2 miles out.

I will admit though, for fear of my dog's safety and the desire not to spend the rest of my life in prison I stay out of the woods the 2 weeks of deer season. Unfortunately their are a few that pose as hunters and are true idiots. I've even heard guys say during deer season collar or no collar they will shoot a dog. They think any dog even a broke coondog will run a deer if given a chance. Of course these are also the guys who have the mentality "If its brown its down"

LOL , I believe that is true Jerry..

It is so easy to end up with more dogs than a person needs. I will say this though ,, if a person takes good care of thier dogs such as feeding and shelter and medicine and gets them adequate exercize,, then I dont have a problem with it ,, BUT we all know of some that dont get these things..

I hunt alot , usually from 2 to 5 nights a week...If I dont go at least once a week , I feel guilty for my dogs , not to mention that I start having withdrawls myself.. lol

If you believe that you are a lot easier to please than a lot of serious hunters I know.
My thoughts on the issue is that a lot of people would rather pawn them mediocre dogs off on someone rather than do the cullin' they need to do.
I have given several of them two years or more to try and make a coon dog and they weren't gonna make it no matter how much time or who had them. If I had wanted to sell them instead of doing the right thing the ad would have read, "Good young dog for sale, cheap. Hunts with the older dogs but I have too many to do him justice. He is just sitting in the kennel and needs to be hunted. I'm selling him as LIGHTLY started. BLAH, BLAH, BLAH......"

Ron, I can tell that you really give your dogs lots of attention, I bet they are some happy hounds and they perform well for you!

I know all too well that it is very, very easy to get too many hounds to mess with all of them, and usually they are of good breeding. But, if I see that I cannot afford to keep them or do not have the time to put into a good prospect then I don't even bother getting it. It's just a waste when someone else could be giving it the time it needs.

We hunt 4-6 nights a week and we have 8 coon hounds all ranging in ages 5 months to 12 years. We also have 120 acres of our own land with lots of woods, creeks and fields so they all get a good amount of my time.....I want it to be that way though, If they weren't getting my time I wouldn't have any dogs.

Often times people will tell you that they have not messed with a hound, when in actuality they have, and the hound failed to perform. They are afraid that if they tell the truth they will not be able to get shed of that hound.
Sad fact is that some hounds just wont ever make any kind of a hunting dog, no matter how much time is spent with them.
Thats one reason that I do not fool with pups, there is nothing more frustrating than spending Three Hundred dollars on a well bred pup, spending a fortune raising it, in gas, feed, vet bills, and time in general, not to mention the wait till its old eneough and then about a year later figuring out that the pup just aint gonna make it. Your out a Couple of Thousand dollars, and you still have to get rid of the dog, to get another one and start over again.
If your patient, and hunt from time to time you will have hounds offered to you, and a grown hound, even one that has never left the pen, will either pick it up quick, or not at all, and will save you a ton of money. Just my opinion.

I have wondered when you see someone selling a young dog that hasnt been messed with because of lack of time, then a couple posts later they say might consider trade for a different dog???? If you put the time in and have patience I think you can find a hounds strengths, JMO. I have one now I have had a couple months, she was a year when I got her and lived in a city as a pet. She didnt seem to come to far earlier his fall when we were coon hunting she would barely leave my feet. I take her to the woods a lot mostly during the day to let her out. The other morning I tryed bobcat hunting with her ,niether of us have done it. She got on a track and went a long way on it by her self. Next year maybe she will get going good on coon? I think there is so much talk on dogs starting so young some people want a dog treeing from birth. Sorry for getting so long winded I could go a long time on this , all just my opinions hope noone is offended.

They Key........

If you want coondogs and good ones, you cannot keep a yard full of losers. Every single dog that comes to this house gets a very fair shot at pleasing me. If they don't, they don't. I hate wasted potential more than anything, but keeping something with no potential to me is just as dumb.

Right now I don't really have a good dog to hunt and I haven't been out hardly at all. I do have a 5 month old, and a 5 week old. When there times comes they will be hunted and hunted hard ie given a chance. They either take that chance and run with it or they don't. If I give them a hundred nights in the woods in 5 months, chance over......I either like you or I don't, but once they are done I might be ready for another break.

I don't worry about what others do with their pups.

I feel like if I produced the pup, then it is my business what happens to them. I take it personally when one of mine doesn't turn out or gets some age on them and all of a sudden come up for sale, for little or nothing.

So, for those that do come up for sale for little or nothing, where is the breeder that produced them? Where is the stud owner? Maybe these people need to step up to the plate and either buy the dog and make something of it, buy it and cull it, or somehow help get it in the hands of a coonhunter. Their reputation is at stake and blaming the person that bought it doesn't always cut it.

I've bought several back, was able to improve them and sell them for substantially more. I can't do that will all of them, but a breeder that won't show some interest in what they produced in the years after the sale, isn't much of a breeder, imo.
