Dogs

If you dont want to sale them, you could farm them out. What I mean is let someone hunt them, possibly grand night or night them out. Yet at the same time, if at any time they feel like not hunting them or you want to get them, you have final say over where they go or what they do. If your intrested I know alot of guys around oklahoma that could hunt the dogs for you.

I been there before. My advice would be just to ease off on hunting right now but don't get rid of your dogs. If those dogs will run and tree now then they'll run and tree 4 months from now or a year from now. Keep them and then when you have more time and more places to hunt then go hunting. Just my opinion.

quitting

Id say your best advice has already been given, take some time off and concentrate on your work, if your hounds are finished dogs it wont hert them to lay up a while, when you get back into the swing just, take you about a week and hunt the hair off them and they should fire right back up.

I would cut back and keep one if I were you, get your work done, pay the bills, you still have a hound to hunt when you get time.

What ever you do, don't get rid of them. I've been where you are now. Thought of selling out and letting the dogs go. But in the end, when it came right down to it, I loved my dogs and couldn't part with them.

Give yourself a break, lend or lease them to other people you TRUST and have the worry of their care off you mind for a while. It helped me alot just to have the kids tend them at night for me and only go out hunting with hubby when he was home on the weekends. I now enjoy my dogs so much more, Autumn will be 8 in June and I hope to get 1 more litter from her and my 6 year old male Zam. Dessa will be 2 next Friday and I'm having alot of fun hunting her and showing her. We just got a 12 wk. old Redbone pup, Zoe, and I look forward to getting her going and benching her next year.

Just give yourself a break, relax a bit and before you kow it, the bug to hunt will be back.

Come on reddogg, after all the research I did on your one dogs pedigree and you are thinking about selling them??? LOL

Don't do it and don't worry about not having the desire as much as you did. It will come back and you will be thankful you kept your hounds.

Sometimes when a person has hounds that they really care about they put pressure on themselves about how much they should be hunting their dogs. If you like them, keep them. You can always sell them later. It is easier feeding the hounds you like for a few months without hunting them much, then finding a hound you like when you decide to get back into it.

I was in the same boat as you awhile back. I sold out and went almost clinically insane not having a dog. atleast keep one dog if you decide to take a break. make sure you sell them to people you know, and get the option to buy the dog back.

p.s. hows the witchdoctor pup doing?

squirrel dogs

I was in your place back in the spring. I had 3-4 coondogs, My work was interfering in my hunt time. I tried hunting them on weekends for squirrels, everyone said if they tree coons they will tree squirrels {WRONG} Maybe their dogs, but none of mine ever did !!! I did sale out the only thing I kept was my waders. I decided I would enjoy squirrel hunting, Day time hunting, wife and kids could go since it was day time. I started looking for a squirrel dog it took me 3-months to find one I liked {little dogs but BIG prices}. My wife and I just walked in the door from squirrel hunting today, she enjoys it and I enjoy it. But none of my old coon hunting buddies want any part of it... If you do get a squirrel dog drop the houndsman attitude these dogs are'nt hounds. This is the most fun I've had hunting with tree dogs. I have coon hunted a combined of over 15-years.. I just bought another Treeing Feist pup that will be here after x-mas from Michigan...Just can't get enough of the tree rat hunting !!!!!

JMO Go with a treeing Feist if you get a squirrel dog !!!

Very good advice. I'm currently in the same situation after 25 years of raising, training, hunting and competing with coonhounds. I did decide to sell mine because I hated seeing them sit in the kennel and decided to get back into rabbit hunting. It fits better into my work and family schedule. My 10 year old daughter loves it and I still get the benefit of having some hounds around. wd

dog

There is a gentlemen in a town called Donovan Mo. that has some really good squirrel dogs. I talked to him the first of the week about a 6-month old male pup. His name is Danny Williams. Danny came highly recommened to me by a gentlemen that has over 30 years of Feist Experience, I know he would'nt steer me in the wrong direction to a good bred dog...If you are interested in this guy being your from Mo. I can Email his # to you..Danny said he lives 130 miles east of Springfield...

Hope you can make a decision on what to do...

Good Luck !!!

I have a buddy who puts more time into his beagles than his hounds, but he came up with a plan that worked. He found a 18 yr old kid who loved to hunt, but couldn't afford to get started. So Andy let this kid who's father Andy knew take Major for the kill season. Andy gave him a tracking collar to use and told him if he lost the dog to call him and he would bring the receiver box out and find the dog. This is a win win situation: the dog gets hunted 5-6 nights a week, the kid's friends are getting hooked on coon hunting, Andy and I have another place to hunt when we all go out together.
