with the young dog that you are training--aside from hunting time?
i see these questions on when and how hard to discipline your dog and think it is all relative to how well the dog understands what you are asking of it. i spend time with my hound in the yard during the day on the bench, to lead,load,sit etc and learn real quick what it takes to keep each individual under control.

willscrk.......do the same with mine................have an English pup right now that you just have to look at wrong and she knows she's messed up, and then does the right thing................have a Plott pup that has seen the wiffle ball bat............MANY times...................but he finally gets the point.

I spend a good deal of time with my pups. I carry my pups to bench shows, not because I care if they win or not, but because I believe the handling, load, socializing, and just general attention pays off big in the woods later on.

My 6 month old Stylish Rebel pup goes everywhere that I can take her. I live in an area where she can run loose quite a bit as well. I think that most of the time she acts more mature than a lot of pups over twice her age.

I spend time with the pups in the yard as well as teaching them on the bench. I am starting 2 English pups attention span is short but they seem to have fun. Hopefuly in the future when they are old enough i will show them, Redtick is right about getting them around other pups and sounds other than what they hear in the yard , and pens. Winning is not every thing getting them used to life is better.

With all the demands on my time, I don't spend as much time on pups, outside of hunting, that I should. They do get to run loose until they get old enough to start doing things that aren't going to be good for later on. So during this free time they usually are with me in whatever I'm doing outside.
After their freedom is gradually taken away, I will spend time teaching them a couple things I think any pup needs to know before heading to the woods and that is to come when called and to jump in the pickup on their own. I HATE running pups down and having to pick them up and put them in the pickup.
