dog jumpin in deep river in 20 degrees

lil 3 yr old female treed 5 coons last nite and 4 laid out on branches over the river, so when I shot em they fell in and swirled around...head shots to keep her from fitin to much n gettin drowned..amazing lil dog..she would swim back and draw em up on the bank..except this fat old dude and I hit him in the head and front of the neck, when he was falling out, to make sure he didnt give her to much trouble in the water. problem he was fat and sunk, I think he gulped air in sank lost that one.

I set the coons in locatons to come back n get with the truck thinkin I couldnt skin em or hual em and she was wet and it was 20 degrees out n windy....So I put her in the truck with newspaper on the seat 20 minutes later she was dry n sleepin...I dryed her off a lil with my gloves n newspaper while in the truck..

this morning shes coughing and wont eat...still happy to see me so thats good.

vet says to come by n pick up amoxicillan...any thoughts on this...

I would go get the amoxi as he suggested and get her right on it. If she is really not feeling well and not eatting, get her some of that nutri-cal stuff or some similar product. It is a suppliment that gives them needed energy during illnesses or any time needed. It will also encourage her to eat. If she gets snotty and starts caughing, give her some childrens robitussin or childrens Mucinex. Watch out for fever, that can really pull her down. Most over the counter products can be bought in store brands. That really cuts the cost in half most times. My concern would be, it turning into pneumonia. If possible, I would try to keep her someplace warm. It's a lot of trouble, but, she could get down really bad if not taken care of seriously.

We got caught in a nasty snow storm with our pups last year, while crossing from Ohio to Kansis City, MO. They ALL got so sick. But, with a couple trips to the vet, so he could keep up with how they were doing. They all recovered just fine within a couple weeks.

I hope she gets to feeling better...

Another suggestion, would be to ask him if he had something a little stronger than amoxi...Sometimes, it pays off to go ahead and be aggressive with the treatment sooner than later. If the amoxi is not strong enough, she could get sicker. You could be just wasting time and money if you have to start all over with another anti. Just a thought....

I am from ole school that over prescribing antibiotics is not a good thing. Antibiotics are to fight a bacteria infection. Twenty degree water would not foster too many bacteria.

Personally, I don't see a connection between the cold water and a bacteria infection unless the dog already had the infection and the cold bath just lowered her resistance to fight the infection.

I would try to get her to eat and keep her warm and see how she does.

Same here Larry. Does her breathing sound raspy? She may have gulped in water while swimming back with the coon, this could turn into pneumonia.
