More Copperheads in kennel

Last night, just before midnight, Carrie, a Plott, started barking "treed" in the kennel. I turned on the kennel lights & could see that she was focused on something. Went out & found a Copperhead beside her doghouse - it was about a foot and a half long. I dispatched it with my trusty shovel. I went back to the house & within five minutes she started in again. I turned on the lights in the kennel again, couldn't SEE anything except that she was focusing on SOMETHING. Went out again, saw the tail of a snake protruding in the aisle under the front panel (kennel is concrete with Priefert front gate panels). Went & got my shovel again & found another Copperhead - this one only about 14 inches long. Dispatched THAT one & hoped that was the last one for the night. Will be washing two Copperhead blood puddles out of Carrie's run this morning.
One of my OTHER Plotts had "treed" on a Copperhead about 2 weeks ago - she's in an outside pen. At first I couldn't locate what she was after. I poked in the grass with my shovel and a BIG Copperhead slithered out & curled towards me. I remembered that y'all said they come in PAIRS so I carefully look around & watch now when I'm outside & while training the dogs.

Man, I thought I had it bad trying to get rid of fire ants in my kennel!! Sounds like you might have a nest nearby (do snakes "nest?"). Anyway, there's a product called Snake Away that you may look into. Seems like it was about the size of mothballs and you distribute them aound your house, pool, whatever you want to keep snakes out of. Most hardware stores around here keep it in stock. Be careful, though, I don't know if it's true or not, but I've ALWAYS heard that small copperheads were more dangerous than big ones.

SOUNDS LIKE THERES A DEN CLOSE.

BEST WAY WE'VE FOUND TO KEEP THEM AWAY IS TO:

GO OVER EVERY INCH WITH A FINE TOOTHED COMB AND MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO SNAKES, THEN LINE THE OUTSIDE OF THE KENNEL WHERE THE DOGS CANT REACH WITH MOTH BALL'S ABOUT 1 FOOT APART.

THEY CANT STAND THE SMELL OF THEM AND WONT CROSS THE LINE.

IT'LL BE STOUT FOR A DAY OR TWO TO YOU, BUT THEY WILL STAY STOUT FOR WEEKS TO THE SNAKES.

PLUS, THEY ARE CHEAP!

I used to work at a chemical plant. I had to unload big tanker cars of Napthalene that came in on the Train. NASTY NASTY NASTY STUFF. Especially when it's about 400 degrees or something. Thats hot enough to melt it. I remeber the first time i loosened all those bolts on top of the tanker car and raised the lid. IT FELT LIKE SOMEONE JUST PUNCHED ME SQUARE IN THE NOSE.

Mothballs my next purchase!

Thanks everyone - judging by the SIZES of these snakes I believe you're correct - there MUST be a den (or whatever it's called) where these nasty snakes are "hanging out."
On my trip to the post office for mail, I'll stop & buy a BIG box of mothballs.
I hope mothballs aren't appealing to dogs as appetizers (just in case they accidentily make contact with some of them).

Blacksnakes are a natural enemy of copperheads. Keep a couple of them around and your copperheads, mice and chipmunks will disappear. (might work with a wife, too. )

coleman.........yea i can only imagin that much in one place....... i meber back in the day growing up. at both sets of my grandparents house and my 2 great granmothers house, they alwasy had moth balls around in the house....mostly to keep the bugs out of all the ole timey clothing......another chemical id usearound some places when they were working alive with snakes was Lindane........cant get it anymore,,,,,,,,it would make them come out of hiding... and die fairly quick, but had to be very careful. they come out strikin at anything they thought was movin....heck of a tool on wasp too...but folks that had no business got a hold of it ad double dosed it and caused it to be took away.. just like that termite checial they used to have Chloradane eons ago..

You have a den close by. We have alot of copperheads outthis way and they are dangerous snakes. Please watch your step and be careful. They say the little ones are just as bad as the big ones due to the fact they inject all their venom. A older snake uses the amount of venom it thinks it may take. A vet told me that once. Good luck with getting rid of them.

LOL, never seen moth balls keep snakes away. Did Pest Control for 10 years and can't remember the # of houses I found live snakes laying on moth balls -- either under the house or on side of the house.

Doesn't work............neither does sulfur or products sold to keep snakes away.

If you don't believe it, search the research done on it........you'll find that it doesn't keep snakes away and all you get is a smelly stink from the moth balls.

I hink the best way to keep snakes away is to make sure theres no dog feed on the ground thats a big problem people over look if theres dog food around rats and mice stay and eat it and then the snakes come because the rats and mice that are getting the dog food

Cynthia, you'll never be able to eliminate spiders completely, just control them........The more trees and shrubs you have around the house, the more spiders.

When I treated houses for spiders, I took a long pole with round broom head and went around the house knocking off spider webs on the house eaves and around windows.

Then I treated top and bottom of the house on the perimeter.

I did this on a monthly basis on houses.

Now I have never been able to satisfy my wife on spiders telling her I can't eliminate them...........she expects not see 1 bug in the house.............I didn't have to worry about mad clients..........I lived with the worst one.

The key word in Pet Control is Control...not Eliminate.

As long as you live in a house that has doors and windows, you'll see spiders from time to time.

my first wife got bit by a 10 in copperhead. it did not bother her at all. don't know about the venom. looks like one would be as bad as the other. it barely swelled and had no problems by the next day. im csared todeath of snakes my self. we took her to hospital and theygave her a shot. she had no problems like some people who have been bitten like rotting out and all that mess.

HAD some black snakes

I've always left the big black snakes alone that were hanging around the house & kennel. but I haven't seen any for more than month or so. Unfortunately my B&Ts (in outside pens) have killed a couple of them. I've noticed that the dogs seem to know the difference between the venomous snakes and the others because they dive right in & efficiently kill the black snakes but stand back & bay the Copperheads from a distance of a foot or so, being careful to keep their distance. Is it possible that dogs actually know the difference?

Snakes

When I use to raise chickens I had snakes THICK! I used a triple attack.
I put moth balls around the brood pens, this seemed to work but after about 2 or 3 weeks I would start losing poults to snakes agin.
I spread Lime think on the ground all around the pens and up to the shrub line, I have no way of knowing if this helped but thats what an old timer told me to do.
I put out mouse traps and glue pads to try and bring down the rodent population hoping that if there was less food for the snakes they would migrate way. Well the glue pads worked wanders, seemed like the first 4 or 5 mice I caught I also had a snake glued to the pad as well. I can only assume that the snake was comeing after the distressed mouse and got caught.

Good luck!

I hear that if you put moth balls down around your kennel it will keep the snakes away. Dont know though I have not tried it just something an old timer told me about. I havent had the issue lately however in the spring I did find a garter snake in the kennel with my pup. We have plenty of poisonous snakes but I havent had issues at my current home.

skyblu - I have heard that copperheads put off a smell similar to cucumbers. I couldn't tell you that for a fact, but, if there is some truth to it the dog has the nose to know!
