Your dogs health --- Leptospirosis

I attended a vet seminar on the subject of Lepto. Lepto is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be passed form animals to humans. Common Lepto carriers include raccoons, skunks, oppssums and squirrels. These carriers shed the organisims in urine. Your dogs are exposed when the wade through or drink form contaminated water sources. Lepto can survive for a long time in water. The bacteria can enter through a cut in the skin or the mucous membrane such as eyes, nose and mouth. Today Lepto is the No. 1 cause of acute kidney failure in dogs. The Vet giving the seminar says he suggest we vaccinate our dogs twice a year.
some signs and symptoms include fever, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea and lethargy.

Just thought i would pass this along to fellow coonhunters.

Barb

Lepto vaccines

You need to research Lepto vaccines. There are 28-30 different serovars (strains) of Lepto and the most covered in a vaccine is, I believe, 6. There is no cross protection. In other words, you can vaccinate for up to 6 different strains but that still leaves more than 20 your dog can get. And the ones covered in the vaccines are not the most common ones.

The lepto vaccine has the highest rate of allergic reaction and the one that has 6 different strains in it is made by Ft. Dodge. I won't allow Ft. Dodge vaccines to be given to my dogs. They don't have a very good track record, imo, of testing before they release vaccines. Remember ProHeart 6, anyone?

Please do your own research into this and don't just take someone's word for it. I won't allow my dogs to have the lepto vaccine.

Annie

I have pretty much always given my own shots...With having as many as I do now it is just the norm now to do it ourselves...The ones we can anyway...I have tried several different brands...I have used the shot that included the lepto before with some mild side effects that were taken care of by giving benedryl (?spelling).
But, the two litter of pups we had last year were sevearly alergic. Heads swell up to the point of their eyes being closed, hives all over the body..The hives would even leaves sores sometimes. I took them all to the vet the first time...I thought I had killed my pups by doing what I should have been doing !! He got the side effects undercontrol and told me to not give it anymore and tell the new pup owners to go over this with their vet before further vaccines were given...Well It was time to give vaccinations again last month and it was a wide spread problem all over the dang kennel...Grown dogs even getting the hives...Called the vet and he told me to double up on the benedryl and keep a close watch for the next 24 hours...I am just scared to death of the Lepto shot now...The Walker gyp that is now 1 1/2 broke out so bad that she is just now getting the hair back where the hives were...I know some of you know what rain rot is in horses...Well, that what this stuff does to my dogs !!

It's gross !!

Oh yeah, it doesn't have a thing to do with age or size...We have a 115 lb male Pit Bull that is now 4yrs. We call him our freak of nature, because he is so danged big...But, anyway, he even swelled in the face and broke out in hives this time...We used the same brand as last time, but seemed to have a reaction of more of a wide spread reaction to the older dogs this time..

I have the same opinion as Annie P. Neither of my two vets have ever seen it or treated it in this area. It is seldom fatal. It has caused hives in pups that I vaccinated for it. I don't vaccinate any of my dogs for lepto anymore.
I would suggest each person should consult their vet to see what is reccomended for their area.

Good point Jim....But, with dogs that are in competition it's kinda hard to know what's what in different areas...Just a thought...Something I worry about when I choose not to vaccinate for it...

Just out of curiousity, has anyone on here ever had a dog come down with lepto or been involved in treating one for lepto? What were your results?

i have lost two dogs to lepto!!it is deadly, it causes kidney failure..the dog will walk with it's back humped up in pain and will drink water like theres no tomorrow...i had a dog come down with it a couple weeks after walkerdays one yr. i think he picked it up when we hunted a old hog lot that had some ranky water flooded the timber..hogs are big carriers of lepto and so are swamps...and i do agree that vaccination does not prevent a dog from getting lepto, because there is to many strains...

one dog lived for a yr. but adventually died.. the other lasted a month... it depends on how much damage is done to the kidneys.. usually by the time you notice the symptoms there kidneys are already shutting down and just end up with a big vet bill and a weak dog..

Yes, I have treated several dogs with Lepto. It is a very bad and very sad disease. If cought soon enough you may be able to treat it, but unfortunatley these cases did not get to me in time and all died from renal failure. I have a very different opinion of Fort Dodge. I use only their vaccines and use Proheart for all my dogs. I gave Proheart shots to several thousand dogs during the time it was on the market and I saw 1 reaction. I do not have very many vaccine reactions with the vaccines I use either. I vaccinate all my dogs with lepto and use it in my hospital because of the cases I have seen in this area where other veterinarians stopped vaccinating against it. If you are concerned, you shoudl discuss this with your veterinarian and find out what the recommendation in you area is. I do travel all over the country with my hounds, so I will continue to vaccinate them for anything they may come into contact with.

I am glad you posted about Leptospirosis disease. It's an ugly way for a hound to die and coonhunters need to be aware of it!

Agreed. And I never had problems with the ProHeart vacc! Honestly though, the more I read about the lepto vaccine, the more concerned I am that the risks outweigh the benefits.

My dad had a dog that was vac. for lepto, came down with it and he sent him to the University of Iowa for treatment. When he came back home he was his old self. Lived close to 2 years longer then his kidneys gave out. That was my dad's favorite hound.

All my dogs have gotten lepto. shots with no reactions, there are two "new" Lepto Serovars out now..Grippotyphosa and Pomona, and there is a new vaccine "LeptoVax4" to protect the dog against them and the "Classic Lepto`s Canicola and Icterohaemorrhagiae".
But everyone is intitled to their own opinion on how to treat their dogs. As for me I will give the shot.

All my

hounds get shots,he got this in the feild hunting drinking bad water some where and dont know exactly where because he would hunt deep and move over to next block if he couldnt find in the one i loosed him in.I think he got it on state land.No react to any shots.Animals pee in the waters and your hounds drink there and the infection comes quick.Hepa can be caught this way to.

i had a dog die from this back in august, it affected her eyes causing her to go blind, she probally would of been one of the best dogs i would ever own. from now on i make sure i give my dogs shots preventing this from happening again.

I used the Lepto vac. all the time, until my pug & the 2 coonhounds broke out in hives & the Pug had to go to an emergency vet, so she could breath. My vet tells me that Lepto causes the highest allergic reation of any vac. I saw with my own eyes the damage it can do. I don't use Lepto now at all. Scared to death to do it, even if a vet was giving it, doesn't make no difference, they still react,
