Old Men Should Know Better
Went to a show tonight and took my whole family pretty much. My mother and sister (who is 10 yrs. old) have never been to one. My mother has not had such a wonderful opinion of coon hunters as more than once she has had them on her land without permission, found a starving hound in her yard with no ID, and met more than one drunk hunter in the dark.
So after 4 years of my husband and I telling her that most hunters are nice normal people, she finally decides to go with us to a show. We weren't hunting tonight, and there was a local event with an early bench show so we all packed up and went together.
We're the first competitiors there. The man checking us in is a friend and we stopped to talk. First guy there is a younger man our age, who is also friendly. Things are going good. In walks a man my mothers age who does nothing more than look at her boobs and walk away starring occasionally.... goes down hill from there.
During the bench show my sister, my 3 yr. old daughter and I are sitting near a group of older men. My husband is showing our young 9 mo. old female while several younger men comment on how nice that dog is. One very loud old man begins cutting her down and talking about how none of them "purty ones" can do anything in the woods. The comments got worse from there, and louder. Mean while both of these kids are sitting here hearing every word, as well as everyone around us including my mother.
This man has a dog come up in a later class against a male dog that we brought. Our male dog is my daughters, and she is obviously VERY excited about her puppy. This man begins running his mouth before the dogs even get on the bench... cutting our dog down for everything from his color to the way he got on the bench. Our male won, despite all his numerous flaws that are being loudly pointed out.
They have a kids show where my daughter gets in with her father and the male who just one. My sister, who has never been around a hound in her life, is assisted by myself with my young female dog. While we had the dogs on the bench, this man was talking so loudly about "those girls" that we could hear him from the bench.
How dare a man, especially one old enough to know better, sit and de-grade my kids! I've heard trash talk about our dogs before, but come on... a 3 yr. old and 10 yr. old girl?! The others must have been used to this behavior as they simply smiled and made nice comments instead of feeding into his ego.
It wasn't all bad, my mother met one of our best friends who she had not met before. And my sister got her first trophy and came home talking about "next time." My daughter is to young to understand what was said. But still, the ONLY thing that kept my tongue silent was my child sitting in front of me with a smile on her face...
BTW~~~ If anyone doubts what these "purty" hounds can do, check out our website. We don't just keep pretty faces!
