Lately I have wondered this myself as the Redbone I own will be 1 tomorrow and still acts like he is about 6 months old. The Black and Tans I have owned in the past seem to mature MUCH earlier than he has. He's a smart dog but just immature and very much like a puppy. A friend told me they read that Redbones do tend to mature later but I have no idea..
Usually, it's been my experience that most people call a one year old a pup.. Eighteen months to 2 years a young dog..
I'd be interested to hear other Redbones. Do they really mature slower?

I had me a bluetick years ago. Heavy, heavy Jet V bred. At 6 months old he would go hunting, strike, run track, and tree his own coon and then fight that succer hard. To say i was happy was an understatement. Never saw a caged coon or even went hunting with another dog but maybe 1 night. At 7 months old he lifted his leg to pee. At 9 months old he was a vicious, mean, man-eating, teeth showing, monster. He died that night.
