Cell Phones

Can a back-up handler/Spectator use cell phones during a timeout to round up a dog(s)?

example: John the dogs are at so and sos place go get them.

Yes. You can use anybody and/or anything EXCEPT your e-collar.
Other than the e-collar, I don't believe you can show me any restrictions in the rulebook or Advisor on who or what can be used to gather a dog(s) during timeout.

I agree with Jim, I don't see anything wrong with using a cell phone to round up dogs during time out. I think the only time it is wrong to use a cell phone is when you are tallking to another cast about scores but other than that I believe it is perfectly fine to use cell phones.

In order for that to be fair, wouldn't every cast member have to have a back-up handler? If you guys are correct that you can use a cell phone, then everyone is going to leave a "back-up handler" at the truck.

Every cast member CAN leave someone at the truck if they want to. If they don't, that is on them.

I know that anyone can have a back-up handler at the truck or in the field as a spectator, but I don't think that they should be able to save you and your hound from the hour rule.

Once the "back-up handler" takes an active roll in the hunt are they the handler for the rest of the hunt?

If that is something that is within the rules to do ( use cells to have back-up handlers catch a dog in timeout to avoid the hour) I'm surprised it is not being used or abused more often.

It's called good sportsmanship to help others get their dog the only rule as to cell phone is no talking between cast in reference to score. The master hounds reads this rule before every hunt. You can talk on your cell phone for the entire hunt if you like so long as you do not talk about score but it would be hard to concentrate on your dog if you are talking.
What if your dog gets out of pocket the hour is started and he shows up at a house they call you off the number on the collar and they have your dog you going to scratch me ( I think not)

The hour starts ticking the instant timeout is called. Say we are 30 minutes from the truck and my dog and your dog are at large. I have a Maxima on my belt, your tracker is back at the truck. I find and catch my dog before you can even get back to your truck only to find out your dog is 20 minutes the other direction. I'm at the meeting place with 20 minutes to spare because my tracker was on my belt, you get scratched for the hour because your tracker was at the truck. Is that fair? Of course it's fair. Why? Because the rules were followed. The fact that some are better prepared than others isn't ever unfair as long as the rules are followed.

So let me get this straight, say I'm guiding a cast 10 minutes from my house, the dogs get out of hearing and time out is called, I can call my wife at home tell her where I am and to start looking for my dog in the next section and if my wife gets the dog back to me within the hour, all is good regardless of the other hunters outcome?

You can call your wife, you can call your girlfriend, you can enlist the help of the National Guard and your local police force and every buddy you can scrape up. You can telephone, cellphone, megaphone and walkie talkie anyone at the truck or anywhere else. Aside from useing your E-collar, there is nothing you can't do to retrieve your dog.

Kennie i would call the Pope for help if needed no where in the rules does it say that you have to find your dog on your own during timeout.

My wife hunts with me when she can, we have 4 kids from 10 years old down to 2 years, so both of us being free at the same time is rare. I wish that I had the camera with last kill season, we were down to 1 kid so we decided to take him to an easy walking spot. Before it was over Deanna was carrying Bradley, 1 year old at the time, had my rifle slung over her shoulder, and packing a coon out, while I led the dog and packed a second coon out. Would of made a great photo from where I was standing.

She has 2 sisters but she is the only one that you would ever find in the timber.

If I called and said Misty was lost she would come help without question.
