Any advice on sick hound....?

My 8 yr old male Toby dog is sick, he has the "runs" really bad and been like this 2-3 days, and he is just laying around but gets up to drink and eat. I hunted him saturday night and he seemed fine, after his last tree he was hot and no water anywhere, he stopped and drank out of a horse hoof print that had water or some type of liquid, might have been pee for all I know. He started doing all this on late Sunday..............any advice other than take him to the vet ?...........

I did switch his feed about 10 days ago, but did so a little at a time. I was feeding Sportmix 26/18 and switched him to Diamond Naturals Extreme Athelete, I have a female in with him and she is fine and gets the same feed........any thoughts ?.........Thanks....Tim

Knox id say its the water he drank., Stale nasty horse piss he shouldnt have inhaled. Im not really sure what to do for him. Cottage cheese may help regulate some. Maybe a little pepto Bismo lol and keep a close eye on him. Hope he makes it ok.

you can give him some yougurt as well, it has good bacteria in it that will help his system get back to normal.

the last time dogs started getting sick everywhere half or more of them died and it was that Diamond dog food that did it. That was just a couple years ago.

My 14 month old female is on the same feed and she is fine, I think it has something to do with the "water" he drank, but you know dogs can drink from about anything and most of the time they never come down with anything from drinking water found in the woods. I sure hope its not from the feed..............

Does anyone know the symptoms from the other dogs that died from the dog food scare a couple of yrs ago ?......Thanks.....Tim

dogs had no energy whatsoever and some even had some hair falling out. Those was the lucky ones. The others were just found dead in the pen.

Tim,

I'd try cutting back on his feed....

The change in feed may have gone well, and he may have adjusted, but there might be a big difference in the quality of the feed ingredients, and he may be getting "over fed'..and not able to handle the excess.????

Worth a try!

Thanks for the help..............I am going to try that and see but still might get him in the vet. I dont think he is going to die just because he is still eating good or you bring a treat to him and he is out of the dog house tail-a-wagging....

Joe, you up for a pleasure hunt this w/end ?.................Tim

I think I'm in agreement with Oakridge. His body may be adjusting to all the different ingredients. I would cut back on the food.....Also a really good home remedy for the runs is canned pumpkin. Just put a big spoonful of that on his food everyday and it should help have it cleared up in just a few days. It has always worked for us.....Good Luck with him. We have always feed Diamond Naturals feed and have been very well pleased, especially with the Extreme Athlete.

Thanks

For all the info and help...........

I gave him a 2nd dose of Albon tonight ( Thursday )........and going to worm him good on Friday, and have cut back on the feed.

I did not see any dead animals around the water he drank..........but I think it was more horse pee than water, just a horse trail in a low lying spot and some liquid in some of the hoof tracks......................just some nasty mess is what it was....!!!

He was out of his house tonight at feeding time and wagging his tail and acted like he felt better.......will keep everyone posted, thanks again....................

Oakridge.........if you can hunt this w/end let me know and we can meet somewhere Friday or Saturday.......................Tim

Yogurt and or bene-bac is always good for what ails them. I have raised litters with yogurt in their food and have been amazed at the pups internal defense system. Always start at the easiest fix.
