Harry Lister Died Today

Harry's wife Gretta called earlier this afternoon. Harry died at 4:20 pm today. His funeral arrangements are pending. She thanks you for your prayers for Harry. Please continue to remember Gretta and the family.

I met Harry in 1965 when I conducted his father's funeral. Our mutual love for coon hunting helped to forge a lifetime bond between us.

He was hunting an outstanding grade Black and Tan with which he had won numerous hunts back when all hunts in our country had both a grade and a registered hunt.

Harry was a high school teacher and outstanding basketball coach.

He finished Crow's Boss to a Dual Grand Champion back in the late 60's and Lister's Corker a son of Boss to Grand Nite Champion.

He also handled Al Norman's Grand Nite Champion Norman's Coonstopper to several, if not all, of his wins.

Since then he has owned, trained and championed several other outstanding hounds.

Harry could shoot a slingshot well enough to use one coon hunting. He could blow a tune on a cowhorn or blow two at a time.

He was a talented, positive, likeable, honest man and I thank God to have known him as a friend.

I will pass on to Gretta any comments made about Harry.

If any of you learn the time and place of Harry's funeral, please post it. If not, I will post it as soon as I know.

Harry Lister will certainly be missed. He was a straight shooting gentleman, and a very serious competitor. Our sport of coonhunting was bettered by his influence as a hunter, a showman, a Master of Hounds, and a Bench Show Judge. He was a mentor to many young hunters and a friend to so many of us older ones. His passing will leave a void that can never be filled.

I surely didn't know him, but it sounds like I missed out because of it.

Sorry for your loss. Our loss was Heaven's gain.

I'm glad to have been able to call Harry Lister a friend of mine. Harry came on board as a UKC Field Representative in 1988, the same year I started at UKC. I worked closely with him for the next seven years that he was a Rep and he was a real mentor for me in this sport.

Every time I'd work an event in Texas I'd make a point to hunt with Harry. He always rode that big spotted mule. He loved his mules and hounds. Beagles too. He always had a couple beagles and enjoyed a good rabbit chase. Always had a sack full of those fried pies that Gretta was famous for whenever I'd see him at an event. I learned from Harry that when driving in Texas and someone comes up on your bumper you pull over and let them pass (something I still do today and am probably the only person in Michigan that does). It's funny the little things you remember about a person. He was a great man.

I've been looking all morning for a photo I have of Harry and I shooting slingshots at one of the World Hunts. I can't find it yet but will post when I do. I have two hand whittled sling shots that Harry made for me and they rank high among my few keep sakes.

Rest in peace Harry Lister.

Harry

I did get to know Harry pretty well when I lived in Texas. Always thought of him as a wonderful person and houndsman. Always had kind words to say and had a great big smile. I enjoyed the time I knew him and was around him. He will be missed!

Wasn't it Harry that used to ride the mule in leading his dog and then shoot cans with his sling shot at the early American Heritage Hunts in Hearn Texas ? I enjoyed that, part of the reason a young Michigan couple drove all the way to Texas just to enter a couple dogs in the bench show.
The longer your in this sport the more you realize how much we've lost when someone like Harry Lister passes. RIP

Harry......

Todd,

You and I share a lot of the same memories of Harry. I too have one of his homemade slingshots that he gave me at the American Heritage Hunt in Hearne after one of his amazing shooting exhibitions. He could hit a marble tossed out on the ground with another marble from horseback!

I first met Harry in 1969 at a hunt in west Texas when he was hunting Corker, a pup off of Crow's Boss.

I made a real bad mistake this summer. Harry called and left a message on my cell phone saying that he hadn't heard from me in awhile and thought I had forgotten about him. He said he hadn't forgotten about me and just wanted to wish me and my family well. I saved the message in my mental "To Do" list but I didn't return that call - a sad but valuable lesson learned. I regret that more than I can express.

I'll always remember the big Texan, his hounds, his mules, his big smile and his friendship. My prayers are with Gretta and his family. I've forgotten his daughter's name but I remember one time he was sporting a 20x beaver Stetson that she had given him. He was so proud of it and of her.

A true coon hunting legend has left us and all of us that knew him are sad today at this news.

Our prayers are with the family. About a month ago Harry and another man came to North Central Ok looking at a blue female. Him and I sat on the tailgate and talked dogs and mules. I told him about our watermelon patch and he couldn't wait to go pick melons. When the others got back we headed to the patch and loaded up the pickup with melons for Harry to take home and share with his family. One of a kind and he will be missed.

HARRY THE GENTLEMEN,

I cant remember the first time I saw Harry, but it was about the time we bought Dual Gr. Ch. Table Rock Flying Hawk.
I drew out with him several times and it was always a good hunt and he would put you in coon.
He was at Ada, the year Mr. Glen Nixon let me have "Gr Ch. Table Rock Speed" . Mr Nixon didnt know me but when I offered to show "Speed" for him he ask Harry and John Wade about me and I think they blew it up a little. He had me show and after we won the entire show with "Speed" and he had never been on a bench before that day I brought "Speed" home.
Harry guided My cast the night I finished "Fying Hawk" into Gr. Nt. Ch. at Ada. sect. the town where "Hawk" was borned and where we bought him.
Harry was a gentlemen and he was honest as they come.
A good handler and he knew a good hound.
He will be greatly missed at the Ada, hunts, and yes those fried pies were amazing.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.
I can almost hear him now "Tree Corker" .
Bill if you see the family give them our thoughts .
PRAYERS FROM THE "LASSETER FAMILY"!

Best Friend

WORDS FOR MY BEST FRIEND

THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT WORDS THAT CAN BE USED TO DESCRIBE MY BEST FRIEND, HARRY. THE BEST ONE OF WHICH IS FRIEND. MY BEST FRIEND HAS GONE ON AHEAD OF ME. WILL THIS WORLD EVER BE THE SAME. No! AM I PREPARED TO TRAVEL ON WITHOUT HIM? YES! HOW DO I KNOW THAT? BECAUSE I KNEW HARRY FOR THE LAST 20 YEARS OF HIS LIFE. HE HELPED ME GROW UP. THANKS TO HARRY I AM PREPARED TO TAKE THE REST OF MY JOURNEY WITHOUT HIM. THIS IS ONE HUMAN THAT IS DEFINITELY A BETTER PERSON BECAUSE I KNEW HIM. YES, MY BEST FRIEND IS GONE NOW.

I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT THIS WORLD IS SUFFERING A GREAT LOSS TODAY. SINCE MY FRIEND LEFT THIS EARTH ON MONDAY AT 4:20 PM AND IT HAS BEEN CONTINUEOUSLY RAINING. IN MY HEART I BELIEVE MOTHER NATURE IS CRYING-MOURNING HER LOSS. HUNTING WITH HARRY OVER THE PAST 20 YEARS HAS BEEN A BLESSING. HE HAD A HARD TIME GETTING AROUND IN THE WOODS BECAUSE HIS KNEES WERE BAD. MOST OF THE TIME HE WOULD TELL ME TO GO AHEAD TO THE TREE AND HE WOULD BE ALONG DIRECTLY. NOW THE SITUATION HAS MADE A 180° DEGREE TURN. TO EASE THE PAIN OF MY LOSS, I BELIEVE TODAY THAT HARRY WENT ON AHEAD OF ME TO THE TREE AND HE’S WAITING ON ME TO GET THERE.

SEE IN ALL THIS TIME WE SPENT TOGETHER WE HAD SOME SPIRITUAL DISCUSSIONS. I KNOW WHAT HARRY BELIEVED AND WHERE HE IS TODAY. HE ENJOYED THE LIFE WHICH HE HAD BEEN GIVEN. HE WOULD SAY TO ME, “LOOK AROUND, SEE HOW BEAUTIFUL THESE WOODS LOOK? DON’T YOU KNOW THAT NO MAN COULD HAVE CREATED THIS. IT HAS TO BE GOD.” THIS WORLD IS IN BETTER CONDITION THAN HARRY FOUND IT. HE MADE A DIFFERENCE. THE SPORT OF COON HUNTING HAS A DIFFERENT MEANING TO ME TODAY. IT MEANS THAT I GOT TO KNOW ONE OF THE BEST HUMANS ON EARTH.

“HEY BUDDY CATCH THE DOGS AND TIE THEM UP. I’LL BE THERE DIRECTLY.”

AFTER THE ZONES IN ASHLAND OHIO 15 HOURS FROM HOME ME AND MY FRIEND SAM HODGES WERE PLANING ON GOING UP TO ILL. TO DO SOME PLEASURE HUNTING, AND SAM BECAME ILL AND I HAD TO TAKE HIM TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM IN LODI OHIO.

AFTER LEARNING HE WAS GOING TO BE ADMITTED I WENT OUT SIDE TO TRY AND PUT A TARP OVER THE BACK OF MY TRK TO KEEP THE DOGS AND SUPPLIES DRY DURING ONE HELL OF A WIND AND RAIN STORM.

WHILE DOING SO A WOMAN STOPPED AND ASKED IF I WAS ALLRIGHT AND WANTED TO KNOW IF SHE COULD BE OF ANY HELP AND THAT HER DAD LIVED JUST RIGHT DOWN THE ROAD AND ALSO HAD COON HOUNDS.

I FOLLOWED HER TO HER PARENTS HOUSE AND MET THE NICEST THREE PEOPLE I HAVE EVER MET.

THERE NAMES WERE MR. & MRS BUCK BATES. AND THEIR DAUGHTER WENDY.

MR. BATES SAID HE HAD JUST GOT HOME ABOUT 30 MINUTES EARLIER FROM FLYING DOWN TO MR. LISTERS FUNERAL.

MR. BATES SPOKE VERY HIGHLY OF HIM AND I COULD TELL HE HAD LOST A DEAR FRIEND.

BUT SOME HOW THRU ALL THE SADNESS OF LOSSING A GREAT FRIEND MR. BATES STILL SHOWED ME THE UPMOST HOSPITALITY BY WELCOMING MY HOUNDS INTO HIS KENNELS AND OFFERING HIS AND HIS WIFES GENEROSITY.

EVEN THOUGH I WAS 15 HOURS FROM HOME I FELT LIKE I WAS AT HOME.

I AM GREATLY SADDENED I DID NOT HAVE THE CHANCE TO MEET SUCH A GREAT PERSON AS MR. LASITER.

MOST OF ALL I AM TRUELY GRATEFUL TO HAVE MET MR. BUCK BATES AND HIS FAMILY AND WILL CHEERISH OUR NEW FRIENDSHIP.
