Tell me about Northern Rex's pups...

I'm considering buying a young male dog sired by Rex, but would like to hear from folk who own and hunt them. I'd like to get everyone's thoughts and opinions, good and bad. Thanks

Michael,

There's not much bad in the good ones. Like any other line, there will be winners and losers. But, the percentage of coondogs is good in this line of dogs.

Check out the Coonhound Bloodlines April Issue - the article on Jeff Nelson. At the end of the article is a partial list of some of Rex's winning pups. It's impressive.

If you want to call me, I can give you details on what I've seen.

Good Luck.

I've been closely acquainted with 4 out of 4 different gyps, and owned 2 of those. My experience, and it's been across the board with these 4, is they are early starting TRACK dogs with good mouths. They've been pretty high spirited, go yonder dogs, and have all been pretty gamey and needed some breaking. Most have been slower to start treeing (over 1 year), but were pull pressure tree dogs when they started treeing. The two I had showed reluctance to tree with strange dogs on occassion. Your mileage may vary...

Thanks Darrell,

That's the kind of info I'm interested in. Anyone else?

Very, Very, Idependent. The one's I have hunted with want to get it done on their own, even when they are young. They are very early starters. And like Darrell said they are early starting track dogs but seem to take a little longer to figure out the treeing. They are somewhat gamey but not hard to break when you show them a few coon. I have seem some so independent that they wouldn't tree with other dogs at all. I hope this helps. I could propably answer many other questions if needed.

Blackdawg..... Since you asked

Do you know anything about the cross between Rex and NITE CH 'PR' Bauer's Kansa Jetta? I bought a 13-month-old pup over the phone today from this cross, going to get him tomarrow. I've never hunted anything from this line before and just wanted to find out as much as I could.

Well, living close to Jeff now, having moved from North Carolina I've had the opportunitty to hunt with some of those dogs and found them to be some of the better B&T dogs I've had the pleasure to hunt against in a good many years.

I've hunted a dog for Jeff (Rex II) and found him to be treeing at 8 months old, very independent, and just did not tree to be treeing, but treeing coon.

Having hunted in most of the states that have events I have drawn a few B&T in my days, but Jeff's dogs impress me and thats hard to do

Like has been said.........you get some of the other (less) caliber dogs with any cross or breed, but from what I've seen of this line theres not many.

Look at what's winning in UKC and PKC. Between Rex and his sister Jewell, I think you can see a common thread. Some won't make it. But, some will and these will be a type of dog you can win with in any competition.

i hunted with jetta's sire renegade , he was loudddd and one of the hardest tree dogs i've ever seen. i also hunted with renegade's full brother fog and their dam zip. all i can say about zip is awesome!!! been with a few dogs off rex that i liked , our dog jack, and one of the nicest young hounds i've seen in a long time is jeremy terry, cory sexton and i think jarvis owns some of him is the skipper dog that placed at b&t days. we hunted him at my hunting club a few months ago. 10-15 coon in less than 2hr hunting time. i lost count.

I just got off the phone with Blaise Bauer, he had a lot in insight on this cross. Everything he said was along the same lines as what you all said. He seems to think that this cross should produce very well. Thanks for all the input, guys...

Rex Dogs

I currently own two Northern Rex and Toppings Amazing Grace Dogs . I don't feel you would be dissappointed in the Rex breeding they are Very Hard Tree Dogs once they are there nothing is going to stop em ! My female alone is just two years old at the age of a year she was in Night hunts and being handled by a 15 yr old boy that placed her 4th in a all Black n Tan Sectional and THIS SHOULD SAY SOMETHING ABOUT THE DRIVE and ability of the Rex Bloodlines. They are tree dogs for sure My female has also in one year won almost every treeing contest I put her in in any state i went to. She is a very nice outstanding female and the male is her brother out of the same lines just a different litter but both have the drive and ability to do what is asked of them on any day heat , rain or shine they will get it done ! and not be laying down at the end just wanting to go again and again and again so I hope you got alot of energy because these dogs will not wear down .

Well.......I can't say I know much about this cross. I have heard that linebreeding Rex to Jewell's pups has produced nice results. I think Jetta is from Renegade x Jewell (correct me if i'm wrong). I would think that crossing Rex x Jetta should work out nicely. Keep us posted on how the pup is doing!!!!

You're right about Jetta's breeding. We left early this morning and have been on the road all day, just got back home. I went and saw the pup but did not buy him.
