Tyson update on Muslim holiday

This was on Snopes
Several days later, however, Tyson issued another press release announcing that the company had reached a new agreement with the union that reinstated Labor Day as a paid holiday and provided employees with a personal holiday which could be taken for an employee's birthday or Eid al-Fitr:
Tyson Foods, Inc. announced today it has reached a new agreement with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), an American union, reinstating Labor Day as one of the designated paid holidays under the contract for covered employees in the Shelbyville, Tennessee, plant.

Tyson made this request on behalf of its Shelbyville plant employees, some of whom had expressed concern about the new contract provisions relative to paid holidays. In an effort to be responsive, Tyson asked the union to reopen the contract to address the holiday issue, and the union agreed to do so. The union membership voted overwhelmingly Thursday to reinstate Labor Day as one of the plant’s paid holidays, while keeping Eid al-Fitr as an additional paid holiday for this year only. This means that in 2008 only, Shelbyville employees will have nine paid holidays.

For the remainder of the five-year contract period, the eight paid holidays will include: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and a Personal Holiday, which could either be the employee's birthday, Eid al-Fitr or another day requested and approved by their supervisor.

What ever. I don't eat Tyson. That's a sin in my family, Dad works for Perdue.

Don't see them letting people off for Jewish, Hindu, or Budhist holidays so why this one? Glad they decided not to do this next year, but why do it this year? Afraid the next plane will crash land in a Tyson plant?

actually it appears that this holiday is really a personal holiday that you can use for which ever day you would like to have off, it seems as though perhaps you misread the original post. myself i agree with sheriff andy, i'll take all the paid holidays i can. as a side note i find it awfully interesting that many of you find it ok to have christmas off but not some other religous holiday off, i mean we do live in the usa still dont we?

Read it just fine, after this year it will be a personal day. However:

"The union membership voted overwhelmingly Thursday to reinstate Labor Day as one of the plant’s paid holidays, while keeping Eid al-Fitr as an additional paid holiday for this year only. This means that in 2008 only, Shelbyville employees will have nine paid holidays."

So this year it is a paid holiday just like Christmas, Labor Day, etc.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for Christmas, it is not just a Christian holiday. If you study the actual holiday (not the birth of Christ but the gift giving holiday), you will find that it's origins had NOTHING to do with Christ at all. It wasn't until the last 100-150 years or so that we chose to celebrate it in America at the same time as Christ's birth. In other areas of the world the same holiday (which goes by many different names) is celebrated at various times throughout the year. It's more of a cultural thing for them, not religious at all.

And even if you wanted to make it a religous thing (which would be nice since our culture does call it CHRISTmas), this country was founded by Christian men with Christian principles who wrote Christian laws based upon Biblical commandments. Heck, In God we Trust is even on our currency (at least for now..). Why should we cater to one religious sect that differs from those ideals? You want equal treatment? Fine. Take away Christmas and Easter as a paid holiday. Replace them with a Happy Holiday Day and the Easter Bunny Day. That's pretty much all they are now anyway right? Or, keep them. And give all the other religious groups there own day as well. Equal treatment for every religion would result in more days off than on!

And I'm not so sure we do live in the same U.S.A anymore. Go to Wal-Mart on a Friday night now and it looks like I'm in Mexico. I have to CHOOSE english as my language on ALL automated phone transactions, it is impossible to get an english speaking customer service rep. on the phone, English is now being taught as a SECOND language in many AMERICAN high schools, and kids are prevented from pledging allegiance to the flag now because they may offend someone?!

Well heck... now I AM OFFENDED. Why does no one protest on behalf of my white American female butt? Oh, yeah. They are to busy protecting the muslims, illegal immigrants, and religious nuts on compounds.

Way to go America. Aren't we proud?

the us is going down the drain trying to be politically correct all the time.

they cater to ever other race religion other than the "norm"

just like with the free insurance for the ILEAGAL imigrants when kids are dieing everyday here because they are poor white people and cant afford it.
