How are they moving??

I am having an awful time treeing coon here lately. I drive a 60 mile stretch of highway to work and have seen a major slowdown in roadkill of all kinds in the last 3 or 4 weeks. I will see a couple setting up, but my tracks stink and I am just not getting it done. I am sure some of it is dog power, but I can at least usually get one treed.

Is anyone else seeing anything similar?

tracking seems to be a little rough here in the Ohio Valley, but we are still managing to tree a few coon. I hunted an hour and ten minutes last night, treed two singles and a den on public hunting ground. I was tickled death. usually if you tree a coon in that park your having a decent hunt. Good Luck.

Here where we hut you cant tree more than two in a nite. Dogs are having to travel 3 or 4 times as far to fi nd a coon and takes forever treed twice sat nite and at was 1:30 when we quit we started at 10. Having to drive around on every drop to get to the dogs its really hurting me having to be up every day at 6!!

Seems like around here some nights you can really get into coon. When the sows and litters are moving good we're treeing coon in a short time. Other nights have been real tough and slow. The last time I had mine out she looked pretty pathetic only to discover she had came into heat. This week we've been hunting a pair of dogs that my hunting partner just got. Neither have been out since last fall. The first night they looked real good but the last couple nights have been tough.
Maybe its the dog power but I just think it is tough out there. These nights with no breeze, no game moving and even as much rain as we had it is very dry out are making hunting not much fun. Add to it a little heat, humidity, bugs and weeds and not getting dark until 10pm, our hunts have been limited to an hour or two.

Hey Ron! I hear ya on the trouble gettin the coon up! About 3 weeks ago I was treeing coon ALL night. Sometimes 6-7 coon a night. Last couple weeks I've had to really work to get 2 up. I'm thinking the coon are finding the fresh berries and not moving as much anymore and there aren't as many tracks. I know my dogs have been working their tails off!

I'll be out there soon to hunt with you and John. See what we can get done! Take care man.

I been turnin loose before dark.Last night it was 9:25 & treed two before it was dark & then another rite after. By 10:20 my hounddawg had made three tree's & seen coon in all. Seen 13 while huntin & another 9 on the road on the 4 mile trek home.

I think now around here anyway's you need to get out real early & maybe earlier than I have. Lot of coon bein seen between 4:30 & 6:00 but it's still fairly warm then & I reckon their headed to water. Get on them creek's & lil fingers that run outa the holler's You'll tree some & won't need a light.

Ron........

I've seen coon 3 different times now @ 3:15 in the afternoon.

Each in different areas.........within 16 miles of each other.

Two singles and one sow with 4 kittens.

My son took a quick video with his cell phone of the sow/kittens

running down the middle of the road.

It was kinda funny.........we followed them down the road like we were herding cattle.

Seen another yesterday evening well before dark.

They're really hitting the mulberrys here.........Caught one on the ground last night and seen another sitting up in a mulberry tree.

Coon moving good here!

Best crop of kitten coon I've seen in 10 yrs! they are every where. On the cool nights they seem to run all night. On the warm ones they run right after dark and then right before sunrise!

Do you know it it illegal to run dogs on Ohio State public hunting areas from May 1st to August 31st.

Ron, we have been doing pretty well right before dark and right after dark. When it gets to around 11:30 or later the tracks seem a lot tougher and like the coon haven't been down in quite a while. I don't know if they are running early in the evening and then again towards dawn???? We have treed a few cubbies though so I guess that's a good sign.

We did get a nice hot track last night around 11:45 so I guess it all depends on where you are hunting and what the weather has been like. It stormed on and off here for about a week and it has finally let off for a couple days....

Robert Welch,
I apologize for referring to it as state owned public hunting. What I am hunting is ran by butler county. Sorry for the confusion.

Hunted Thursday night and treed 3 singles and a circle tree in a couple hours. Hunted last night and had a terrible hunt. We were hunting three dogs seperate and neither one of them seemed to be able to move a track very well. We started kind of late and thick fog set in. We called it quits around 4:00am. Hope everyone elses hunts are going well.

I was just trying to keep you from getting arrested by your local GAME WARDEN.Thought maybe you was running on Rush Run or Prater areas.Glad you were not actually.Have had the game warden around here give warnings to people running on Darke Wildlife Area.He tells them next time they get a ticket!

Good Question Justin, sometimes I have to check myself. I lived in Kirksville for the last year and now I am in Mercer. I will be back in MO for Fall of 09 if all goes well. My wife is a professor at Truman. We still have a house out East here so I am spending this year here working.
