Why Walkers?

Why in the coonhound bloodlines book do Walkers.. Dominate ? In the back of the book are the reproducers lists and the percentages are way off from the other breeds....Then looking in the PRP Sires there are currently 7 full pages of stud dogs available and the other breeds have 1, 1 1/2, maybe 2 pages at the most... I hunt with Walkers cuz thats what I've been sold as good coon dogs, all local sales have been on the up n pup( I hunted them..before I bought/traded). One friend told me if you can train a redbone to be a great coondog he's worth his wieght in gold ...?That might be a local thing... There are nice coon dogs of other breeds..Champions..yet the numbers game prove that the Walkers Dominate...What happened from a history stand point.?? intense breeding and culling?? What?

all my buddys hunt walkers and ive owned a few and every other breed besises a red dog. but i prefer black dogs over them all. there is good dogs in every breed if you get one from good breeders. walkers start quicker then most pups which draw alot of guys to them. its all in what you like.

Black dogs=Plotts ,,,I imagine if so Plotts do not have enough reproducers to meet the current requirements to have 10 top dogs in the current reproducers listing. That really gets me there are not 10 dogs meeting the requirements...The topic " Will a blue dog ever win the world there is an article on a man named Capehart selling his dogs.....he says AMericans are the worst at reproducing canines...I understand its an Ad. Yet there is some truth there...SO Walkers...where selected and perfected....Worked at by Houndsman...One friend told me I got feed it everyday.....no ugly dogs....I got a mutt at home thats UGLY..but i feed him cuz there is no better sneaky watch dog then him.....Hes neuterd...

jmo'....breeders have focused on walkers and improved the walker breed by leaps and bounds....i hunted blue dogs 20 years ago from what i recall everything was pretty even then....im no expert but it looks different now...we used to have guys hunting all different breeds around here but now when i go to a hunt its all walkers almost every time.

i have 3 black dogs that hunt as hard as walkers but also tree coon behind and infront of walkers. i will admit that i went thru a few pups to get 3 that please me. but there is good hounds in every breed if you get one from a good breeder.

Fellow, I tried, and spent alot of money on the other breeds, raised pups, bought dogs, and even talked bad about Walkers until I owned one.
Black and Tans, would usually run any trash they came across, and if you found one that could tree a Coon, it would cost you a fortune, and you still have to worry if you see a Deer, in the spot your turning loose, Blueticks were usually mean and backtracked, not to mention Boot and Bawl for ever.
Redbones, well at least here in Texas, they just love Armidillos and not much else, English would trail for miles and miles without even treeing, and to be honest Ive never seen a Plott tree in my life. Im just gonna stick with Walkers. They are just better, and if anyone wants me to raise and put my time in any other breed of hound they will have to pay me!!!
I would however like to try this new Leapord Hound, but where the heck are they? http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/...=Multimed-2.jpg

ok ya'll know about it..lots about it..and there are champs..But when the dogs first hit the country they did not tree coons...cuz where they came from there where no COONS....yet we Americans trained and raised em to tree Cooons....or we tried I have a walker that is a doofus...wouldnt sell him for the world cuz hes mine....Now in all honesty he'll split tree...he'll smell the coon moving through the trees.. ya know how they move.. he can hear em and smell em and hes treeing running on the bank looking at where hes thinks they are....now thats prolly 65% of the time... the rest of the time I'm tellin him to getr the heck away from me.. or waiting for him to come back from chasing a deer...But hunting season hes AWSOME thas about the 65%..he 90% in season..maybe taste does something for him...and every night hunts.

But..How did the Walkers get to the top..based on stats in a book...true...I still wonder..Intense breeding and intense culling ...JMO.

agree for most part...... breeders have focused on breeding and improving the competition walker, which is not always the best coondog.... yes the great ones shine through, but there a whole lot more culls.... i've hunted everything but redbones, I have found that for competition the walkers are hands down, if u have the money & want to win the big hunt..... if u just want to compete & win ur fair share of the regular hunts, then go with what ever breed u enjoy.... i prefer to hide hunt w/ the bue dogs, although I have seen some dang accurate english dogs as well as black dogs..... JMO
